LVF Monthly Update: February!

Oh child, I've been out of commission and I apologize! January has been filled with tons of birthday activities that have been keeping me incredibly busy and thus have made any sort of updates on LVF very slow. But now let's get on with some updates and soon to be posts!

First up, this month's coordinate is featuring the ever awesome Ellejay of Sherry and Cookies. I consider her to be one of my best out of town friends and I miss her incredibly! This Teddy Bear's Cafe coordinate is stunning, casual and fun! I love the edition of the hat and the donut bag is always a plus with the print. In terms of this movies Lolita Video, I actually chose a vintage trailer instead! If I haven't said it enough here, I love The Swan Princess. It's probably one of the most underrated animated movies of all time, with very few flaws and fantastic music/animation for an independent studio flick. If you need your Swan Princess fix, a while ago I made a Dress Up Time with the princess herself, Odette.

In other news, my birthday happened only a few short weeks ago! I turned the ever non-impressive 22 (or at this point I'm just adding numbers, so I turned 4 actually!). To celebrate my birthday, I began with a small group of pals got together to celebrate not only mine but my beautiful friend Crystal's birthday, with karaoke and seeing our favorite Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast on the big screen. Sadly I didn't get to take a lot of pictures since I was busy being a hostess and singing 80's rock ballads like View to a Kill with extreme passion. There was one photo snapped of me and the other birthday girl, sadly with my hair looking not so great due to the weather, but here it is none the less!

On Monday the 23rd was then my actual birthday, and I celebrated with my amazing boyfriend Brian! We spent the day mostly at my house cuddling, with him being a good sport and letting us watch together not one but 7 episodes of Jem and The Holograms Season 1! I'm a lucky lady to have such a glitter accepting boyfriend. Then we ended the day by going into New York, having dinner at Aspen Social Club (aka Gaston's Tavern) and seeing (for my 9th time and his first) Phantom of the Opera starring my favorite Broadway Phantom, Hugh Panaro. It was truly a magical night that I'll soon not forget!

I was also treated the next day by my mother to seeing War Horse at Lincoln Center! I can't recommend this show enough and how it's a must see if you go to New York or London. The movie was incredible, the book was one of my favorites as a child, but the play is the best of all the three versions. It's a sight to be seen in person and can't really express the impressive nature through video, though seeing this is adorable regardless.

But what is up next for LVF? I'm very excited to be celebrating Valentine's Day with friends, along with going to various shows and concerts in the coming months. Like...

- Jesus Christ Superstar with my boyfriend

Yes. Lots of things are happening!

Did I also mention I'll be going to Anime Boston in April too? So pumped!

BUT what about the frills? There are some new additions to my wardrobe on their way, and I'm incredibly excited for them to arrive! I'll definitely be wearing them all the time at the events I'm going to.

LVF's Thoughts on Manila Luzon's "Hot Couture"

It's no secret that I love Drag Queens, and if I had my choice of specific queens that would rule the world, Manila Luzon would be at the top. This native New Yorker, is to me, a true talent above others. As Ru would say, she has uniqueness, nerve and talent (along with beauty to match!) Back in 2011, I was introduced to the new crop of queens on season 3 of Drag Race. I wasn't sure my feelings on most of them, but the minute Manila walked into the room I knew it was drag love at first drag sight!

Now exactly a year later, we come to a magical moment for Ms.Luzon - the release of her first music video Hot Couture. I can't exactly explain how excited I've been for the unveiling of this high definition epic, but trust me it was well worth it! The behind the scenes clips and teasers gave me hopes that this would be a glamour filled classic, but I had no idea what magical visuals I was in store for.

But let me just say that when a video starts off with a little kid version of my favorite Drag Superstar, I knew I was in for a good time. There are many incredible outfits and shots, all shot on one of the nicest cameras I've seen. The editing is fun and in sync just right. But the best moments come towards the end (Can we say Manila Antoinette anyone?) The pink orgasmic outfit towards the end was to die for. Thus I definitely say if you are at all of fan of beautiful things, frills and magic - by god, Manila knows how to serve it to you on a platter honey!

With a song that is catchy as hell and a video that is beyond even more fun to boot, Hot Couture is a masterpiece that I think even the legendary Miss Paul could take some lessons from (I'm just saying, her videos need an HD upgrade which then otherwise would be perfect!) Overall Manila has produced what I think to be the best music video from the Drag Race alumni, and should definitely keep up the good work. I can't wait to see what comes up next! My suggestion? Have Raja write some rhymes and do a collab honey! Diamond Crown Couture anyone?

Dress Up Time #16: Belle from Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Well hello there readers! It's been a while, but after an amazing vacation and a wisdom tooth removed, I found some time to make a new post. The best part about this post is that it's in celebration of the re-release of my favorite fairy tale and one of my favorite Disney movies, Beauty and the Beast!

So how do you celebrate such an event? Why not dress as every girls favorite book worm, Belle! Belle is more then just her name appears to tell us (Beauty, incase you didn't know!) but she is perfection with perfect flaws within her. She has become a symbol for all of us who are considered the odd girls of our town. Also why Belle is so loved is that her "want" or "goal" in life is much more provocative then say Ariel who wants legs or Cinderella who wants to dance with the prince. No, what Belle wants is something beyond those more literal items or events. Belle wants adventure and a life grander then she lives. This is what makes her beyond the usual Disney heroine and adored by all.

With that acknowledgement, it is then a great question - how does a lolita go about bringing Belle into their look? Well since this is a special Dress Up Time, why try not one but three of Belle's looks!

You can do as many variations on any of Belle's outfits. Personally, I'm a sucker for her "Something There" dress. Though I chose something much more princess looking then the casual appeal it has in the movie, it looks more realistic. I also decided to go with a more refined tone on her yellow ball gown dress. I thought a nice simple bolero is a good touch. But whatever way you decide to go about it, make sure your version of Belle has tons of roses in the details. Roses are the important symbol within the movie, along with (but not shown) mirror necklaces or pendents would be a lovely touch as well!

No matter which way you go about it, you can have a ton of fun making your own version of Belle. Her outfits in the movie are devoid of details and thus it's even more fun to fill in the lines yourself! So, feel brave enough to go into the Beast's castle in your frilliest garb? Try it! I'm sure I'll do something similar to this when I go to see the movie in the next few days.

I apologies everyone for my lack of updating! The holidays created a bunch of chaos for me in terms of work and me getting ill. But on the bright side, in a few hours I'll be getting one of the best Christmas treats of all - getting to see my frilly friend from CA who will be staying with me for a week! As a result, expect some more videos and posts in a more personal sense with her visit coming soon.

Curious, what did everyone get for their respective holidays this year? I didn't get too much in the world of frills this year, but I did get some adorable Doc Martin Polka Dot boots in Black and my other favorite present being My So Called Life The Complete Series! I hope everyone's holiday was lovely and that you have some epic New Years Eve plans! I'll be celebrating a day early at this year's Dances of Vice celebration called Moonlight Circus! With the theme being circuses, I decided to dress as the Show Pony girl. Have big feathers in my hair, pink tutu vibe and possibly harlequin tights or something of a fun pattern to my liking. When I started LVF I had no idea what kind of a response I would get. Yes, there is a very small amount of you that come to read the posts and comment on them. But seeing the few of you that do have such passion and love in your hearts makes me really never want to give this blog up. I hope to be getting more on the bandwagon with making LVF more fabulous for the next year and the years to come. Yes, it's December 1st. Can you guess what that means? Officially it's only a few short weeks till the biggest Holiday of the year. Though you might have already finished your christmas shopping way in advance like myself, there might be the rest of you (seriously, its ok if you haven't. I just work at a mall) and are looking for the perfect gift for that frilly person in your life or need to suggest a gift for yourself - here's some ideas.

1. New Scents!

All right, I'm going to do sort of a shameless plug. As some of you may know I work at Bath and Body Works at my local mall, and as a sales associate I'm asked to talk up our new scents. Though sometimes I disagree with these ideas, our new scent really is amazing and I'm seriously a big fan! It's called Be Enchanted and is a mixture of Pomegranates and Sugar Leaves. It comes in the usual styles (Lotion, Shower Gel and Splash) along with others. Other scents to check out are Strawberry Sparkler, Secret Wonderland, Winter Candy Apple and Paris Amour! Trust me, you can never go wrong with smelling good for the holidays.

2. I Am Chubby Bunny

It's pretty true that when it comes to Lolita Fashion, you can never go wrong with a bow. Bows are essential, beautiful and make an outfit truly complete. So why not combine that with your frilly ladies favorite things? If so, check out Iamchubbybunny.com! This brand is all about bows, accessories and is even going forward into apparel for the Spank! fan in everyone. You may know Chubby Bunny from their famous Hello Kitty bows and their various events that they make special bows for. If you are really looking for the perfect gift for the bow lover in your life, Chubby Bunny can do no wrong.

3. Locketship

So you know that you wanna get her a special piece of jewelry, but nothing at the normal places in the mall are doing it. She has all the Tarina Tarantino and Betsey Johnson collections from every season, but you don't want to just slim down to a gift card at Macy's. Look no further then Locketship, an amazing brand that features some of the most beautiful and colorful of designs out there. Though a bit pricy, some of these pieces truly are worth it. I'm especially obsessed with the Sparkling Sea collection and the Unicorn one as well. Basically these pieces are amazing and I'm obsessed - so I'm sure your girl will be too.

As mentioned, the two options above are pretty pricy. So what do you do to get a truly unique gift for someone that has it all without blowing all your savings and that down payment on the new Angelic Pretty reserve? Check out the various amazing handmade stuff on Etsy! Here are a few of my current favorite stores to check out. First, for the mermaid fan in us all check out Siren's Grotto by internet darling Traci Hines. She makes tons of amazing accessories to fit your favorite mermaids color and tase along with things for the fellow cosplayers out there, and if there is any mermaid you can trust it's Traci for sure! 5. Classic Christmas Movies

It wouldn't be a La Vida Frill's Christmas without bringing up the world of film, of course! So if interested soon a post about my top 5 Best Rankin and Bass Christmas Specials will be up and I recommend going for one of those. Also there are a slew of old reviews/recommendations from past Christmas's I've made on here, including my all time favorite The Polar Bear King. Be sure to look for more Christmas themed movie ideas in the next week or so.

Drag Queens and Lolitas: An Essay

Deep within the realms of the universe lies a world of two cultures - one of a more glitz and glam and the other of a more classic attempts at beauty. Both share similarities that one could not configure through a normal looking glass but when looking deep within can see a world of possibilities. I bring you a luscious "A-ha" moment ladies. Are you ready? Drag Queens and Lolitas are ridiculously similar.

Now that you might have had a gasp and a moment to think, take a deep breath and remember - be calm. No, I'm not saying that we are men dressed to be female impersonators (though we do have Brolita's and gosh do I love them!) but instead that like Drag Queens us girls in frills are of a very similar attitude, mind set and cultural behaviors. We are both of an extreme subculture based around fashion/appearance, and we have an actual system of rules and regulations that keep it in order, excluding it from other subcultures and lifestyles. (You don't see a group of girls that are religiously obsessed with Wal-Mart or reserving prints at Kohls, do you?)

So in honor of the teaser trailer release of Rupaul's Drag Race Season 4, I just had to write this article - the article of my dreams. Now if you are completely stumped on how RuPaul relates to Maki and Asuka, well take a look below at a side by side comparison of somethings that you may find surprising. Trust me, when I had the revelation it definitely took me a back. So let's lip sync for our lives huntee, and check out the relations below.

Drama

Let's face it, there is definitely drama in Lolita Fashion. You know it, your friend knows it, hell even your momma probably knows about it too. From the infamous drama communities, cgl (it exists honey, let's embrace it...?) and even just private little spats - it's a drama cliche driven world out there. But guess what? Drag Queens have that all too. Sure they might not have an online forum community like us but there are plenty of cat fights and backstabbing.

Take for instance the drama on RuPaul's Drag Race, specifically Raven versus Tatiana. Raven is a much more professional and older queen from LA, where as Tatiana was younger and newer at the game (think of it as an older Lolita versus an newbie). Raven would basically tease Tatiana to no end, allowing it to end in a catty fight towards the end of the season. As mentioned, there is definitely a dramatic difference between the older Queens versus the newer ones. Maybe it's a age thing or maybe even something of jealousy or envy on both sides, either way it can end in a big ol' mess. But when Queens come together after a battle it sure is a lovely sight of love and harmony, which I believe can be said the same for any relationship patchwork. Speaking of which....

Older Vs. Newbs

(a.k.a Heathers vs. Buggers)

You know how it is when you start out in the scene, everything looks a bit bigger and scarier then it does later on in your frill life (Trust me, I was extreme fail the first go around) and the same goes doubly for our fellow Queens. It's one thing to dress in a poofy dress and call it a day, but to dress as the identity of another gender?

Oh honey please, it ain't easy. But then you've been in the scene for a while, you've evolved from that girl asking the questions about Bodyline on egl to the one answering the questions about Angelic Pretty. We learn and we grow. But as mentioned above, both of these scenes share their drama in the generational gaps.

The best example in this can be that of the two cliches discussed at length in Drag Race Season 3, Heathers vs. Buggers. The Heathers (formed in the show of Manila, Raja, Carmen and Delta) were the beauty queens, the fiercest and the trend setters. They always would win competitions, have the best dresses and lip sync with the most passion. Much of the time the Heathers would be Queens in their "prime" or had been around a decent enough time to know a thing or two.

Then on the other side we have the Buggers (or to frilly relate, Itas or Newbs) The Queens that maybe aren't as polished as the others because they are newer to the scene or maybe didn't listen to their Drag Mothers as they should have. Sometimes Buggers can be the ones that are more reliant on their wit then say their looks or their sewing skills. Buggers can also be a bit easier to jump into drama then say Heathers, where they like to be in denial of a flaw and attack a Heather to make themselves feel better. (Sound familiar girls?) There are even some Queens that'll give themselves other titles like a Veronica (Raven dubbed herself this in Drag U Season 2) But not all these groups are filled with drama....

Last Friendships

It's true that some of the weirdest of events can gain you the greatest of friends, and I was lucky enough to have been granted the chance to have some of the best friends a girl can ask for because of this Fashion. I honestly think my life would be a lot more duel, sad and just not sparkly enough if it weren't for the beautiful and talented people I've met while wearing the frills. I think the same can be said for the long term friendships made through being a Queen.

These are both subcultures that you really need to make lasting bonds within to stay current and continue on with it for the long hall. I know I'm never the best dressed in the culture, but I do consider myself to be the Miss Congeniality, and that comes from the friendships I've made and the ones that are far beyond just about dresses - they are about a sisterhood huntee! We can teach one other things within the fashion and within life itself.

Queens and Lolitas can bond over this. You really can make lifelong friendships with people you otherwise never would have ever thought of to meet, just because we share this similar love for poofy dresses and a time long forgotten. Queens share that similarity of wanting to be fierce, beautiful and creative. Together, friendships like this can rule the world and make it ones that withstand even more then the ones you might have had in high school or in college. The girls I've met I know will be there for me forever, as I will be with them.

AND FINALLY......

We Are All Fabulous

That's right girl, everyone in these cultures is amazing and fabulous. Even if you are new at this style and just attempting to see if you even want to fully dive into it, you've already made the biggest step of all: Being Yourself. In a world where we are told that everyone should just be the norm and that is what is praised, honey - no normal person ever truly succeeded. As RuPaul says to all the girls, "Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent" are what is gonna get you places and that is exactly what you need in Lolita Fashion and in life in general.

Drag Queens have taught me that confidence is the biggest and most important factor in your entire out look on life. If you don't believe in who you are and what makes you fabulous, then you might as well go home and cry to your picture of Maki and Asuka. Like many that have come before, sitting in a corner and doing nothing doesn't solve any problems or get you anywhere. And if you don't feel fabulous right now, change it so that you feel so! Even if someone says you can't - you can!

From watching the girls on Drag Race and seeing my other friends I've made a commitment this year that I'm going to make myself feel the most fabulous then I ever have. I'm going to take my lessons in treating myself right (and getting rid of those little bits of pounds keeping me away from some brand pieces), getting myself some wigs (you can never have enough of those!) and making me the ultimate version of myself! But aside from the outer stuff, I want to make myself proud of who I am as a person. So trust me, a new La Vida Frills is upon us and it'll be fiercer then ever.

If you are feeling the same way, girl - get yourself to where you need to be and take some advice from those that are incredible. Pick a role model (a Queen works too!) and figure out the things that you like about them, and apply them in a natural and mature way to yourself. What do they do that I can reasonably do that'll make me feel like a true and fabulous Diva? That's what Queens do and trust me, it'll make you feel sparkly all over.

So what have we learned today?

You are amazing, Queens are amazing - and if the world don't see that then they need their overpriced sunglasses checked. So what are you going to do today to make yourself feel amazing?

Mirror, Mirror Trailer

Oh gosh guys, here's the OTHER SNOW WHITE movie trailer. I present to you Mirror Mirror, a movie that considers itself to be the superior Snow White re-telling. It's of a more lighter family appropriate affair with some cheesy jokes, divine costumes and Julia Roberts. (who I have a love hate relationship with!)

Originally I was going to hate on this movie just simply based on whose directing it, (Damn you Tarsem!) but I'm giving it the upper hand as it really reminds me of the Fairy Tale Theater television series style of storytelling. Comedy and fluffy with an adult sense of humor. Also Nathan Lane is in it, therefore it must be incredible because he is my comedy god.

LVF's Winter Tips!

My favorite season is fast approaching and I'm seriously just buzzing with excitement over all the fun and yummy things coming up! So though I'm no expert on all things for all seasons (my friend Parfait Doll is though!) I thought I could at least write down some things I believe are frilly essentials for the cold times a-comin'.

1) Drink As Many Delicious Hot Drinks As Possible
Maybe it's just me, but I am a sucker for a good cup of either Chai, Hot Chocolate or Apple Cider. Though I usually love these drinks all year round, there is something special about getting them during the colder months and adding a splash of whipped cream at the top with some sprinkles or chocolate chunks. For me though it's all about the mint or the dark chocolate. Just last night I tried a new favorite - Mint Green Milk Tea! It comes in a beautiful Mint color and is delicious without being too intense. Also I recommend trying Max Brenner's brew of Dark Hot Chocolate - the more intense the better in this case. It'll give that lovely yummy winter cheer in your step.

2) Invest In A Good Pair of Mittens/Gloves This Winter!
If Halloween was any indication for us on the East Coast of the US what winter has in store, this tip will certainly be helpful. I personally have tons of gloves but I always lose them. This year I'm making a decision to get rid of all the gloves I can't wear with most of my frilly outfits and in turn find a pair that works for all and every kind of outfit. Though some might think they are ridiculous, I'm seriously digging these pair of cupcake inspired mitten to fingerless style gloves that come from Urban Outfitters. Urban along with Forever 21 have tons of great styles to chose from.

3) Buy yourself a really nice present. You deserve it girlfriend!
This year has definitely been a strange one. Filled with drama, fun and incredible adventures. Though I had bought some little treats for myself down the road and an amazing Graduation present - Christmas is the time to celebrate the year and what a better way then to get yourself something nice to end the year on a good note. This year I've decided to indulge myself in a TaoBao spree! I've never bought a lot from TaoBao stores before, but I keep hearing how great the prices are and what amazing things behold in them. Also, I'm seriously eyeing these babies to wear with my Lovely Sweet Room print.

4) Watch A Christmas/Winter Themed Movie You've Never Seen
Since LVF is a lot about the movies, you know you can expect to see tons of Christmas/Winter themed movie posts coming shortly. But the question is, is there a Christmas movie you haven't seen before? Well this year go out and find one you've been itching to see as a kid. Though I have watched it numerous times I highly recommend the short 30 minute TV Special The Wish That Changed Christmas, about a girl who wishes to have a specific doll in a window after she's been kicked out of her orphanage for the winter. Every year I get a bit teary eyed and nostalgic watching it.

So those are just a few very simple little tips to make your winter more enjoyable. Though not maybe the most creative, these make my favorite season even better. New Trailer: Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

So it's beginning to seem a lot like.... Summer trailer time! We already got some love from super hero trailers and other horror surprises as well and it isn't even 2012 yet. But one of the movies I'm the most excited about? Snow White and the Huntsman.

Now I'll be honest I'm not terribly excited by Kirsten Stewart being a part of this project but everything else seems perfect. The visuals, costumes, and choice in other roles (Chris Hemsworth, need I say more!) look nothing short of incredible. Unlike previous fairy tale related films of the past year (COUGHCOUGHLITTLEREDRIDINGHOODCOUGHCOUGH) This looks like a high caliber film and definitely deserves respect. Also hopefully since it seems to be a Summer release it'll be decent. Curious? Check out the trailer in the link /website!

Making New Blog Friends and Other Updates!

This past weekend I got to meet Ellejay of Sherry and Cookies. I can't explain how magical and amazing a person Ellejay is. She lights up the room with her smile and her spirit! A true one of a kind lady!

Just Some News: New Web Review Series "Drawn to Fail"

So I've finally started working on my dream project! A video review series that is all about the fail of a good portion of Animated films. I thought you frillies would be interested in checking it out as the first episode is all about the rip off Snow White sequel "Happily Ever After"! I will admit that the first episode isn't perfect but if this show becomes more successful, this could be the place for me to start posting over reviews including Lolita Fashion Movie reviews!

LVF's New Addiction: Lalaloopsy Dolls

Last night, My friend Crystal and myself went on some errands and just happened to stop in the big Toys R Us in Times Square. Little did we know that we would find an extremely new collection addiction in our midst. Step over to the side My Little Pony and welcome Lalaloopsy Dolls. Now, some might think these dolls look a little on the creepy side. But to me these are a Lolita's dream doll. They have a slight gothic tang of rag doll style to them but with tons of sweet elements all around. Just read their description:

"The Lalaloopsy Dolls™ were once rag dolls who magically came to life when their very last stitch was sewn. They each have different personalities that come from the fabrics that were used to make them. They live in a colorful, silly world, and with your love, their magic can go on forever!"

I just love every single aspect about them and now am dying to collect some of the Mini versions. They come in a variety of styles, colors, and even ones for boys! Personally I'm having a lover affair over Crumbs Sugar Cookie, Marina Anchors and the new special edition doll Suzette La Sweet (hope they make a mini of her eventually!) "She's So Unusual: Lolita Fashion in the Media" Overview

So my panel has passed and gone with success! Though it took a idol to open the show for me, I've seen stranger and have been the stranger thing prior to many things as well. But I must confess, I was extremely nervous to present this and would have liked to have practiced more. But overall it was an experience I'd love to present again (maybe at another east coast convention in the spring? Hint hint!)

For those of you that might be been interested to see the panel but couldn't make it, don't worry there is a video coming soon! It was shot by a friend of mine (thanks Ann!) and should be available in the future that isn't as distant.

NYCC After Math Post #1

So I only a day ago returned from my adventures at New York Comic Con/Anime Fest 2011 and by far it was one of the most insane years possible. I didn't get to do too many guest related things or interviews, but I did present a wildly successful panel and attended some of the coolest presentations of all time. There's a lot for me to write about and my fingers are just crying at the prospect of all the button smashing about to take place, but don't worry there's a lot of content for you lovely frillies to check out here and on my sister blog Twenty Four Lies Per Second for tons of nerdy and lolita coverage for your enjoyment!

In the meantime, I'd like to mention a big thank you to MTV Geek for mentioning my panel (and when I mean mentioning I mean commenting on....) as a list of their "Most Off Beat Panels" at NYCC. Because when you know it's a legit comment about your knowledge in a topic can when it's confirmed by a channel that should have changed their name like 10 years ago. You know cause they don't actually play music anymore - irony, it's cool. Also major props go to the picture, super special yo.

Dress Up Time #15: Little Twin Stars

I definitely have a thing for Little Twin Stars! Being my favorite from the Sanrio catalog (I also have a thing for Tuxedo Sam and our favorite kitty of course!), these two little kids come in the cutest color palette ever and share a wealth of products under their belt that are charmed and whimsical for any age group!

Being twins in my favorite color palette automatically makes me love them and the interpretations are endless. From bags, to wallets, to charms, to cupcakes - you can't get enough of these two. I also am in love with all the variations of them, especially when they are dressed up in fancy fairy tale outfits or snow gear.

So how can you capture the pure bliss of the Little Twin Stars? Simple! All you need is an imagination, some collection of blue and pink pastels, and a lot of charm and dreams. Check out the outfit below for inspiration ~!

Here is my coordinate - can't you tell I love Dream Sky by Angelic Pretty? I can't help but notice how it seems to be related to Little Twin Stars and the color palette is my dream (ironic!) of mine for any dress to be in. I combined it with a pair of adorable star tights (sadly they are children's size) and a pair of Little Twin Stars inspired bows from dellamore on etsy.

Casual but it would be the perfect outfit to go on cotton candy adventure of fluff and fantasy like the Twins themselves!

NHK x Tokyo Rebel Taping: This Friday at 3PM

Hey there readers! Sorry for the lack of posting again, been busy recovering from Fashion Night Out and getting pumped for NYCC/My panel! But by golly is there something cool happening tomorrow for all those in NY and I am extremely excited!

Tomorrow Tokyo Rebel will be hosting an event exclusive within their store where the TV Station NHK "Tokyo Kawaii TV" will be filming the customers for a special episode to air sometime in the future. Part of the episode will be at the store while the rest will take place at CHA-AN, and NHK will exclusively invite some of the Lolitas to have tea there!

So now I'm on a massive hunt to coordinate the most epic outfit possible that showcases my personal Lolita style and that will make me stand out in NHK's eyes, hoping that I'll get chosen as one of the lucky 20 girls!

First off, I was originally going to wear just punk style - but as much as I love it when I saw letsgocolourful's tumblr I became inspired to do a more sweet style coordinate!

So with that I decided to do something more on a Fairy Kei inspired side! There will be tons more accessories added to this outfit but hey, why the heck not go all out for this right?

I don't always wear blouses with my outfits, so I'm hoping to start up again this winter with this one. I also plan on taking the insane detachable bow from the JSK and attached it to the collar of the blouse - hence why I got inspired by the outfit above! Finally I plan on making my very teased and adding tons of bows and charms in my hair. I'm tempted to do possibly buns instead but I'm not sure still.

LVF Check Out: "Big Sexy" - For Women Everywhere.

Lemme just put this out there - I'm not thin. I've never been thin ever in my life and have had curves attached to me without signing any contracts. It's taken me a while to embrace myself as beautiful due to this fact and it's been a struggle back and forth between "Should I be ok with this?" or "I need to change this!". Well I can finally say that a recent new TV show changed my mind towards the positive. Don't get me wrong, I could change a bit of my chocolate intake (for my teeth's sake) but nothing else is changing cause I finally realized I am beautiful, thanks to the ladies of "Big Sexy" on TLC.

If you haven't heard about this series the scoop is pretty simple: It follows the lives of plus size girls trying to bringing themselves into New York's fashion world along with living their lives of romances, struggle and friendship. If there ever was a show our culture needed to get a slap in the face with, I think it be this one. Even if you aren't considered to be the size of the show's cast, I think everyone can find something relatable about these women. But something I can't help but notice is their confidence and their fierce-ness.

The one that stands to be the fiercest of them all is Audrey. This girl gives every other girl, thin or big a run for their money. Her ability to have so much confidence inspires me in every way possible, allowing her to become one of my new fashion heroes. As someone that is both a bit on the tall side and big, this gives me a load full of inspiration. I recommend checking the show out just to see what amazing things this girl wears (Check out her Time Out article here)

But the best overall part of this new series? It's lesson. Be proud of yourself. It's a struggle many of us have to face, things about us that sometimes we can't change or facts that we have to accept and these girls embrace all the hopes I have for females around the word: acceptance of yourself. These girls are all beautiful and take pride in the fact that they find themselves to be such and knowing that makes me think they're beautiful too, inside and out. This definitely is a lesson all girls can have, in Lolita Fashion especially.

My new goal in life: To be as confident and stylish as the girls on this show. I think it's a lesson we all can aspire to have. Check out "Big Sexy" Tuesday at 10PM on TLC!

LVF Presentation at New York Comic Con!

My apologies for my readers for being MIA for the past couple of weeks! First off California was amazing but Hurricane Irene wasn't as fabulous, trust me. I promise I have a lot of things to post including pictures and stories from my epic vacation along with some reviews and more!

But let me post the thing I'm the most excited about: I'll be doing my first ever panel at New York Comic Con! It'll all be about Lolita Fashion within our media/pop culture, along with tons of fun clips, prizes and more! So if you're planning to attend New York Comic Con, please come and check it out. LVF Loves: DIY Jewelry - Taking The Old and Making It New Disney Style!

Sure sure, so many people know what DIY is and "Do It Themselves" anyway, so why does this post even matter? Well with my recent discovering mynostalgic objects and the upcoming D23 Expo approaching more quicker then ever, I thought this post would be tiny yet fun and a bit of a change from the usual.

Since My mom has been on a kick of finding things that'll keep her innocent image of me alive, she seemed to find a collection of treasures of my Disney loving back in the 90's and seems to have been reawakened just in time for D23! But what treasures are these exactly?

Do you remember being so into the Disney Princesses as a kid that you'd want to dress up as them? Maybe this was the beginning stages of me wanting to become sort of a "frilly girl" stylin' lady as I am now but I was definitely into the Princess Dress Up sort of play and these toy sets were my life. Luckily, the thing that my mom happened to find was a variety of these items all in a small box. Somewhere yucky, some were a bit too damaged, but many were just right and have now become newly made pieces that'll be coming with me in some form to D23!

This piece came from a Cinderella playset probably around 93 or 94. It's a lovely baby blue plastic locket with a bow decoration at the top and a picture of Cinderella inside. I'm pretty sure there might have been a picture of Prince Charming as well, but seeing as he wasn't a favorite of mine I probably ripped him out hoping for a Prince with more personality (Look, even then I was specific with men!) I've already put a cute gold ball dot chain to it, bringing out the lovely yellows of Cindy's hair! It just happens to go lovely with my Twinkle Princess JSK!

This piece is probably my favorite I found! This little castle comes from an Ariel Playset from 1998 - around the time of the Little Mermaid re-release to theaters. It came as a series of items in which you could change the trinkets on the necklaces and bracelets within the set. Maybe it's just my fascination with pink and blue together, but this piece was always my favorite - probably also cause if has a working door! It also happens to go perfectly with Jelly Jewelry!

Dress Up Time #14: Marie from the Aristocats

In celebration of my big Disney trip in only a week, I thought it would be fun to make a series of post based upon the characters that I'll be dressing as at the D23 Expo! First we'll take a look at my character Disney animal, Marie from The Aristocats! Marie is a little white fluff ball with tons of spunk and style. Though young, she has a lot of attitude and knows who clearly is the lady of her other family members. She dreams of being like her mother Dutchess and loves to show off more then her brothers. Marie is just adorable all around!

Probably the neatest thing about Marie is Disney's insane line of merchandise featuring - especially that coming from Japan. If you are at all into Marie, you can find pretty much

anything featuring her coming from any of the Disney parks or stores, especially Tokyo Disneyland. I'm lucky to be a owner of a few of these items but my favorite is most definitely my Marie Popcorn box. Now I know this sounds odd but trust me, it's the cutest thing in the world.

As you can see though there's even more things Marie that you can't even imagine to have her on. I'm lucky to be an owner of a few of these rare items and will be sporting some of them at D23 if you're curious to see more!

But now how does one capture the cuteness of this kitten heiress? The great thing about Marie is she's super basic so there are lots of ways to go about doing an outfit inspired by her, below is my current version of an outfit for her but trust me it can be dressed down a lot more or dressed up to the nines! Check out below!

This is one of the many many ways you can do Marie in a lolita format so don't take this as any sort of official have to's. First chose a Pink jumperskirt - I went to Angelic Pretty's Assorted Cookie JSK (an alternative version of Wonder Cookie!) then I went with an off-brand blouse that I originally bought from Mashimaro Girl. Though technically it's supposed to be bear eats rather then cat ones, I love the giant detachable bow which goes so well with Marie's personality and love of girly bows all around!

Next I chose to go with something a bit more fairy kei (and comfortable) with wearing some pink converse and legwarmers. Granted you can go with the more traditional Lolita roots of Tea Party Shoes in Pink, but I think this works for Marie especially with her being a kid - wanting to go on adventures and all! The best part with wearing Chucks is they come in a variety of styles and you can dress them up or down whenever with putting on some bow clips into the shoes, which I also did when I went to Pony Con this last July!

Now we come to accessories! I decided to play into the more french themes of things like Presents and Parfaits but including my Present Box bracelet from Angelic Pretty and an off-brand Parfait brooch (actual not shown). Finally (if you can find them) look for Marie themed jewelry such as the special face ring they made as toys in Japan. You can easily find them on ebay along with Dumbo and Mickey styles!

Finish the look with the perfect hair! Instead of going with the traditional cat ears or a wig, I chose to go with this adorable double bun style (great tutorial by VenusAngelic here) You can add tons of little pink bows or charms all around or go with a big pink head-eating bow at the very top!

As mentioned, there's tons of different ways to go bring about this adorable kitty in your outfit! Whether it be Fairy Kei inspired or a very elegant try - you can't ever go wrong with Marie! Now go show them why "Everybody Wants To Be a Cat!"

LVF is going to D23 Expo

So if you haven't noticed I've been a bit MIA for the past couple of days. I just returned from Otakon '11 (report post on that eventually) and been working in preparation for the greatest vacation I'll have had thus far in my whole life. It's coming up in only 10 days and by jolly am I excited more then a little kid at Christmas. Because what I'll be attending is my Christmas, My College Graduation, and a million trillion Otakon's worth of excitement rolled into 7 days of pure epic fantastic times, especially with 3 of them being the bestest of any day in my life thus far. I speak of my dream convention, my number one fandom celebration that I can't even express: The Official Disney Convention, The D23 Expo!

For those of you that don't know one thing about the D23 Expo, it's a weekend of celebrating everything and I mean EVERYTHING Disney. The movies, the parks, the TV channel, the characters, the merchandise and even the coolest fans. With new additions like Marvel and more, there really is something for everyone (even my boyfriend, who without him I wouldn't be going to the convention!) I'll be there to celebrate all of these aspects and to finally be in the center of my most favorite fandom in the world. I probably will scream, cry and smile harder then I ever had AND I'll be in lolita the whole time while doing that!

I also will be getting to Disneyland, Universal Studios and Hollywood while I'm at it! While going on my various adventures I'll be hopefully meeting up with the CA Lolita Girls, including Julie of Bonjour, I'm Julie Doll !! We Disney girls gotta stick together and I'm beyond excited to be with such an expert as this lovely lady!

Iconic Love Letter: Prince

It's hard to sometimes find a musical idol in America that fulfills all our needs for multitudes of beauty in both physical style and music talent. The majority of the time I'm pulling my hair out from the fact that most artists cater to only the publics pleasures and not that of actual artists or people with slightly different interests, and then there are few artists that cater to both. Some of these include other LVF favorites like David Bowie and Michael Jackson, but today we're going to pay tribute to the frilliest of these male artists: Prince.

Prince is by far the closest America will ever get to an Lolita appropriate male artist. Yes as the prior mentioned can fit into this category too, I think Prince fits the bill more then others, especially with his ever infamous and fabulous album/movie Purple Rain, Prince sort of set himself apart from everyone else after its release. It's all about the glamour and the destruction that the rock music world can have on a star, but we don't care cause Prince looks just oh so pretty in it the whole time.

The best part of Prince though is the music and his appearance in promotional music videos. Dear lord does this man have charm in every which way. The most obvious of his charms are shown in the video for "When Doves Cry", where Prince climbs slowly out of a bath tube and into the leaping hearts of many a fangirl (like me... possibly!) With the combination of fedora hats with veils, lace gloves and ridiculous pastel shades - this video truly has it all (Did we mention legit doves?) If you can't find some sort of inspiration for fashion in this then that is just depressing.

Also "Purple Rain" just happens to be one of those love ballads that sticks with me forever, probably because of the ridiculously good guitar coming from it - haunting and yet so beautiful. Though not to single all the other songs out, each Prince tune has its own special place in my heart and should have a place in your heart as well.Did we mention with all this coolness that the man is a shy bit over the big 5-0 and still looks like he's in his 20s (Maybe he took a magic potion and possibly a vampire - I've always been curious).

Overall there truly just isn't anything that could keep you in some way from loving this purple prince of power and grace. He's got it all and has the coolest guitar on the planet. Whether Prince or just a symbol, the man is simply an icon and should be remembered for all this fabulousness (even with his not as fabulous ideas of recent year!) So wanna give a try at looking like his majesty? Look at the outfit down below!

This outfit is as Purple Rain as it gets. I chose one of the traditional JSKs from Alice and the Pirates, along with an Angelic Pretty jacket for a nice feminine look of bows and more frills. The hair should be curly and feature some of the dove shaped hair clips shown along with a nice sparkly bow for a flashy touch! Finally finish it off with some purple lace tights (maybe over the top of some bold colored tights for a more modest appeal) and some epic Doc Martins for a rock'n roll edge!

Basically, you can never go wrong with Prince. So come on and Go Crazy with a bit of his own personal flare in your own lolita style!

My Little Pony Fair 2011 in Rhode Island!

This past Saturday was the official My Little Pony Fair and Convention in Pawtucket, Rhode Island! I went with my dear friend Victoria of Parfait Doll and met up with Lindsay of Pretty Pop Designs! We all got in our pastel best and headed to the Hasbro Factory for some fun with all the Equestria girls and more

There were many fun sights and sounds at this so called Pony Con, but the point was really to bring on the nostalgia and magic of these incredibly simple but yet beautiful toys. Basically this was all held in a large room where multiple booths or "stables" as they were called would be set up where you could buy anything related to MLP you wanted. There were older ponies, newer ponies, tiny ponies - pony watches, pony bags and even as you can see pony chocolate candies!

There were lots of contests to be had like custom made ponies (one of them showed here), a costume contest, even one for stables! There were even some small panels and discussions. The best of the panels was one held by Hasbro where they unveiled some new details for the coming toy season and more. My only complaint as I've been to multiple conventions is the lack of activities outside of the "Fair". Personally if they want this convention to be even more successful I think it'd be best to involve more workshops and panels that are in seperate rooms. Something I know I would have enjoyed is a panel strictly about Friendship is Magic (the new TV series) and possibly talking to voice actors and the creator. But this is something I think Hasbro can work slowly to getting right and eventually it'll become a much more successful event on that regard.

So the verdict? I would definitely go to the My Little Pony Fair again but only if it was nearby. I don't think this is the sort of convention to invest a lot of your time into unless it grows more in size or is given more of a convention feel. Our drive to Rhode Island was about 2 and a half hours but was definitely worth it and I would go to it again if it was in a location just as close. But unless you really truly are a big MLP fanatic then this isn't exactly something to get tide in a knot over. I would highly recommend it for the Nostalgia but otherwise it just depends on your taste!

Iconic Love Letter: Broadway Musicals

One of my favorite things to do during the summer is go with a loved one to see a Broadway Musical in Times Square. When I was little it was the closest I could get to feeling like going to Disney World every few months. My mom would always have us plan a day in the city around the show and is probably one of the reasons why I feel so confident holding meet ups - I learned my planning and use of the few hours before the show in style through going to shows with my mom. The best time to go see a show though? In the Summer! It's air conditioned, lots of amazing entertainment to be seen and when you come outside the night makes everything even cooler and very atmospheric! Those that is why todays Iconic Love Letter goes out to Broadway Musicals!

Broadway Musicals are something special that no other real art form has truly captured the exact same magic for me. But since there are so many amazing shows its hard to talk about them all as one general thing and best to speak of the ways that can connect to you personally. So we are gonna try and go with a different spin on Iconic Love Letter and I'll break down my few favorite musicals that you frilly ladies and gents might find the most interesting to yourself! Check out the list and see which one sparks your fancy.

Though this isn't my most favorite musical of the bunch, this one holds a special place in my heart for being the thing that made me realize my fascination with the 18th century and my somewhat obsessive attraction to long haired men in frill outfits. Percy is one of those great characters that definitely makes you feel pride and want to go on adventures with him and The Scarlet Pimpernel does just that - make you feel confident listening to it. My favorite song is "Into The Fire" a great boosting chant where Percy leads his rebel group into danger. This musical isn't perfect but it's definitely one to add to your look out for list.

Definitely one of the favorites, Les Miserables is a timeless piece of art that is so incredible its hard to really put to words the justify it's amazing appeal. I wrote about the 25th Anniversary Concert here but seeing the show live is truly the best experience of any of the ways to see this show. The best songs in my opinion are "Stars" "On My Own" and "Master of House" though nothing can really top the most epic piece of music ever "One Day More" which really is the perfect example of conflict building within a very short time frame. There is finally a live action film in the works and I am extremely excited for it!

I think I've said it hear enough that I love the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast more then a lot of other people in the world. It's timeless, romantic as hell and very layered. Every recreation of it is great for its own reasons but I think the Disney musical is my favorite because it adds even more layers to the Beast's inner conflicts. The song "If I Can't Love Her" is beyond epic and makes me cry or at least get emotional every time I hear it. I'm convinced its one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever! I was lucky enough to see the show 6 times in my life and each time was something special. I've also seen a lot of really great people in the show including Donny Osmond as Gaston (yes, it was that hilarious!) Overall this one needs to come back to Broadway in an even more epic revival.

In my top 3 musicals of all time for sure. I would say this is my favorite but it switches around a lot for other shows - but why you wonder? First off for those who have never seen the show here's the plot. The story is that of a transgender window dresser is in jail for corrupting a minor but lives out his days fantasizing about his idol Aurora, an actress from the golden age of cinema. But one of her films stands as a note of fear for Molina: The Spider Woman, who kills with her kiss. Suddenly he is met with another prisoner named Valentin who now is his cellmate. The story begins to twist and turn as the two learn about each other in the hardest of times. For me this show has some of the weirdest music ever but stands as a work of art with its tribute to the 40's and yet it's political statement on Latin America. It's based on a novel and there is a non-musical film as well. Maybe it's because my cousin played Aurora in a production of it or that I just have weird taste but I really love this show.

Overall there are so many great musicals and I haven't even spoken about a mere fraction of what there is available to hear and see. So what's your favorite musical? Anime Next 2011: A Little Frilly Adventure

A few weeks ago I went on a surprise adventure with a few of my new and old friends to New Jersey. The occasion? Anime Next, an annual convention and one of the biggest in the tri-state next to New York Anime Fest. The convention was full of improvements from the first year I went back in 2006, including a new location that I had never been to and a much more easy to find set up! The best part about Anime Next though? Lots of Lolita friendly events! Though I didn't get to go to all of them I did go to some and the ones that I made my way to were very special memories I'll keep with me forever.

First off it's best to note the guests that were in attendance at the convention. Kanon (from An Cafe) and Mr.Sakurai (a fellow journalist and lover of japanese pop culture) were making the trip to Jersey bringing with them a love of Lolita and Jrock to the event. Also the h.Naoto spin off brand Sixh was there, selling tons of clothes and even having their own fashion show. But the one I was the most excited for? Yu Kimura. You might know this adorable idol from Kera Magazine and I'll be honest that she's my favorite model and one of my lolita inspirations. With that in mind I just had to go to Anime Next!

My first stop at the con was going to Kanon and Sakurai's panel. Though I had been to one of their panels before at Otakon of last year, this was a treat to get to hear them speak again. I asked them if they were wearing Alice and the Pirates that day to which I got a very enthusiastic yes! The rest of the questions were about Kanon's An Cafe work and some cosplay related questions. Though these were really things of my interest it was neat to hear them speak about anything.

Then came time for the Tea Party. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to go since usually I'm a bit more into going to fandom events at conventions then more fashion events, but I changed my mind when I started to follow the crowd of frilly girls into a supposed "secret area". We continued to walk down the Double Tree Hotel's hallway and noticed further and further that we weren't going to any normal location. Turns out we were going to the Presidential Suite of the hotel which has always been a dream of mine to go into!

Inside a whole party was set up for us with tons of sweets and varieties of tea. The best part was seeing them being put out for us by Kanon and Mr.Sakurai himself. We entered into the tiny kitchen of the suite and there you could see Kanon preparing the treats onto plates for us and sort of just hanging out when finished. For me this was the best treat of all, getting to see a fashion celebrity that I admired just relaxing with us and being a normal person when he would be thought of to be otherwise.

Then we were told to enter the social area of the suite. Unfortunately it seemed the hosts weren't expecting that many people to come to the party so not everyone had a chair, but Kanon tried his best to make up for it by carrying chairs to the rest of us who didn't have one. I can't exactly put into words who cool it was to have Kanon personally bring you a chair, it's one of those moments that'll stick with me for a long time. Next Mr.Sakurai asked us what we do in terms of our Lolita lifestyles which was really neat to speak of with him. I sort of wished there had been a few less people or enough space for us to even more intimately speak with him on such things but the amount of interaction we got was amazing and more then I ever would have thought possible.We then proceeded to take lots of pictures and even had a special appearance by Yu Kimura herself, who was completely decked out in Angelic Pretty's French Cafe. I even got a special picture with Mr.Sakurai and Kanon by myself!

Later on in the day I got to meet Yu Kimura again. I did get two pictures with her but they are on my friends camera and hopefully I can post them here soon since they are pictures I'll treasure forever. Ms.Kimura is beyond the sweetest girl I've met. I told her how much she means to me as a Lolita and how I only came to the convention to see her, which then she replied with the biggest smile and a big hug! I even got her CD which is adorable and I definitely recommend getting. I also was lucky enough to see her mini concert during The Masquerade and she did a great job.

Overall Anime Next was a great experience and if they get more cool guests like this next year I'll totally go again for sure. One more thing to note, I decided right after the convention to send a thank you tweet to Ms.Kimura. I just so happened luckily enough to get a response:

Dress Up Time #13: Jem and the Holograms

I know, I know I talk way too much about Jem and the Holograms. But can you really truly blame me? It's a series that basically embodies all my favorite things about being a woman and in turn being a lolita. The main character wears pink to an extent far reached by others that sparkles and shines in a glorification of tacky yet fabulousness style. The characters all have big hair which currently is a big trend in lolita fashion, especially in sweet that also comes in a wide variety of colors and shapes. We even have budding romances with ridiculous pretty boys that probably in real life they couldn't exactly exist or probably wouldn't be the kind of guy that you'd date. Overall Jem exudes a sort of fantasy that brings about all of my female related interests along with those of many others!

So here on LVF, all of June will be a celebration of Jem as you can see already by the music and graphics on the page! So, how exactly does one bring themselves into a outfit that is truly outrageous and fabulous just like Jem and her friends? Here are some tips and ideas into becoming a frilly version of a Jem girl yourself!

The best place to start is your main dress piece. I'd go with something on the more casual side, like this AP Pop Rock Onepiece in pink! Angelic Pretty makes a couple of these sorts of pieces every year, but this one is my favorite and perfect for Jem! Next you need to bring on the neon pink with a pair of tights to continue with the 80's appeal. Though I always think tights add to an outfit, they especially add a touch to this look.

Jem is all about the dramatic make up, so don't forget to add on some high colored matte eyeshadow. My favorite comes from Make Up Forever who happens to have a great selection of Jem appropriate colors. Sometimes back in the day Hot Topic used to have some good shades that worked well too sadly though I don't remember the brand names.

Now onto the accessories and the shoes! The best part of the Jem is her magical earrings that give her the epic hologram powers that we love her for. Many people make replicas of them on etsy, so you should find them easily and for a decent price! You definitely need a big bow to match Jem's big personality. My bows come from this etsy store Miss Alphabet! She makes the accessories used in shoots of Locketship Jewelry which definitely go together with Jem flawlessly. The shoes are something essential since Jem always wears a good pair of heels. These come from Angelic Pretty as well and the bows are just to die for, also some shoes from ModCloth will do the trick. The final touch on this inspired coordinate is some kind of pink in your hair. You could either have a small extension piece or go with a full wig. Either way it's sure to complete your "showtime" look!

So think you can take on being part of the Holograms and going against the Misfits? Even if you're not a musician you can still rock this 80's glam style to the most and bring out the most outrageous side of your frilly style with the help of Jem. Try it out and see what adventures you come across!

June is Here!? Frilly Entertainments to Get You In The Summer Mood!

Summer has officially arrived and with that it's time to bring on those long summer days of relaxing, dreaming and watching tons of fun things of course to continue your imagination in the most Lolita of ways. Here are a list of Summer must sees and haves that'll get you wanting to frolic through the bright hot days!

The Little Mermaid (70's and Disney TV Series)

I've mentioned this one on the blog before, but is probably one of my favorite animated pieces ever. I can't really call it a complete film, but more like a ridiculously pretty television special. It's the Hans Christian Anderson Version told in the shoujo Anime style of the 70's/80's (my favorite time period in anime). It's absolutely beautiful, colorful and full of emotional development. I recommend it for a good snuggle movie with your prince, mostly because you'll need his shirt as a tissue afterwards.

But on the other hand we have the Disney Little Mermaid TV Series, one that is so full of fluff it will mend any broken bit you have from the previous movie. There are multiple episodes that incredibly adorable that eventually you might find yourself wanting to walk away that you can't handle it, including the music - but then there is a big catch with episodes that actually are incredibly interesting. The stand out episodes in my mind are "Whale of a Tale", "Stormy" and my personal stand out favorite "Metal Fish". This episode is one of those weird "breaking the fourth wall" kinds that features a character named Hans Christian Anderson (if that name rings a bell, it should! Thats the person that wrote the original fairy tale.) who eventually after Ariel saves him goes and writes the same exact story! Whichever you chose, you'll certainly want to splash into one of these adventures.

Fairy Tale Theater

If you grew up only a mere 20 or more years ago, you probably know about Fairy Tale Theater. If for some reason you don't I say with love and devotion, shame! Fairy Tale Theater is the work of everyone's favorite cheese-ball Shelley Duvall, where she would produce these mini movies of famous tales (she would also star in some of them too!) and get big stars of the time to play important roles. I have a couple of favorites to mention such as "The Frog Prince" (Robin Williams), "Beauty and the Beast" (Susan Sarandon) and "The Nightingale" (David Bowie) just to name a few! But if you get a chance, see them all - they'll bring you to a clean fresh world of fantasy this summer!

Yu Kimura's EP "Transcendent Harazyuku girl revolution"

I'll tell you a little secret that actually isn't little in the slightest, my favorite model and idol is Yu Kimura of Kera/Angelic Pretty/Fairy Kei fame! She was the Ambassador of Cuteness in 2009 and is now fully going into an epic and adorable singing career. I got the chance to see Yu this past weekend and let me tell you, she's got the making of something great. She's got the whole package of adorable personality, spunk and fashion sense along with really catchy tunes. Though maybe not something you'd bring about to your frilly ears, I definitely recommend checking this girl out and is the perfect set of tunes to lighten up your summer!

Jem returns to TV on The Hub

A few of you Nostalgia freaks like myself might be in the know, but if you don't know the most totally cool news on the block this summer then let me tell you: Jem and the Holograms is back on TV! I've already discussed Jem in one of my Iconic Love Letter articles, but if you don't know a thing about Jem or just have heard the rumors of this pink beauty then I absolutely demand you to see this! It'll be on in the mornings and late nights on The Hub, the greatest new channel on TV with tons of other nostalgic and soon to be nostalgic TV shows! (Look out for another Jem related post soon!) If you need something that can give you fun music, silly moments and total fashion inspiration look no further then Jem!

Scented Cooling Mists

I can't hide it, I'm someone who gets hot and burns really fast (I suffer from being ridiculously pale and Irish). The Summer for that reason isn't a joy for me in the slightest - that is until only a few weeks ago! I just discovered the rebirth of the Cooling Mists and now this new creation at stores with Scented versions! My favorite comes from Bath and Body Works with their name Coconut Mango collection. If you are looking for the most perfect thing to have this extremely hot summer I can't recommend this enough and how it is 100% a Lolita must have!

Dress Up Time #11: Some Kind of Wonderful

Recently today I decided to pop in one of my favorite movies ever that I haven't watched in a couple of months: Some Kind of Wonderful starring Eric Stolz and Mary Stuart Masterson. Though not exactly anyway or shape frilly related, it some how puts me in a great mood and thought it would be fun to make a Dress Up Time post on it (I've missed making these!)

The plot of Some Kind of Wonderful is your basic high school behavior: The outsider loves the popular girl but can't seem to get her. Keith (Eric Stolz) is a less then cool student at his high school - He's poor, a painter and works at his Dad's Car Repair shop (But he's so my kind of guy, le sigh!) On the other hand we have Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson), the most popular and prettiest girl in school. She has everything - the hot popular boyfriend, tons of beautiful friends and a sweet bitchin' wardrobe to match.

Yet there is one character who is in the middle of these two, Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson). Watts is by far my favorite female character in film history, truly my hero and basically who I was in high school with a slightly more girly edge but only slightly. Watts is an independent and free speaking girl, who never questions her actions or her opinions. She's Keith's best friend and Amanda's worst enemy - yet there's one thing she can't seem to be honest about: She's in love with Keith. I can't spoil the entire movie, but this slightly conventional story is actually super unconventional and I love it for that.

Now, how do you exactly embody the whole style of this little movie into your own frilly side? Let's take a few cues from Watts and see what happens!

First I chose a JSK that was with a darker tone with a tiny print. I also had to Musical style especially since Watts loves playing the drums. Watts also has a thing for Men's clothing, including jackets and hats. The Jacket and hat are from Forever 21 and happen to go very well with the dress in my opinion. The leggings bring in a super punky and 80's feel, and I can't explain how much I love these Sex Pot Revenge ones. The boots are Steve Madden, which are a Watts trademark along with the fingerless gloves. The finale touch is a pair of Rhinestone studs, which are a symbol of the movie and something Watts dreams of getting as her own. There's a lot of ways of taking this sort of outfit in different directions, but anyway it can be tons of fun!

So definitely look into Some Kind of Wonderful, the most underrated John Hughes movie and you'll see just why it's so incredible - you'll share in the inspiration if you try and outfit out like this!

Lolita Day - Summer 2011 Edition

Loli-Day is fast approaching and I am beyond excited! I'm always curious was to what my readers plans are, so give them to me! Are you going out with friends or spending a lovely day pampering yourself? Maybe you're going to a meet up or just a date with a special companion? Are you doing any fun activities or trips? Let me know!

For me personally I have two big goals: Baking delicious Homemade Oreo Cookies and listening to a ton of my favorite Lolita wearing inspiration tunes! Here is a list of my current favorites that maybe you could find inspirational too:

1. Glamazon - RuPaul

I can't explain exactly what it is, but RuPaul has this ability to make me instantly like anything he creates musically and everything new tune is beyond addicting. Glamazon is currently my favorite, mostly because even though it has nothing to do with Lolita lyrically it has this confidence boosting sound and has great motivational messages "She's taking names and kicking ass", thats how I want to and eventually feel everyday in Lolita! I also recommend "Main Event" which is so disco fabulous I can't even.

2. One in a Million - Private

Private is one my favorite music finds ever. Every single song of theirs is a great deal of "catchy" that is hard to exactly put a point on why it works. Think about all those great 90's dance hits with a modern twist and you have Private. One in a Million is probably my favorite next to "Crucify My Heart" - but the reason why? Simple, cause it makes me feel special. Isn't that enough to understand?

3. Alice in Wonderland - Lisa Mitchell

This somewhat sad tune is not exactly like the others but has this beautiful atmosphere it creates. Of course it's speaking of Alice in Wonderland, everything Lolitas favorite - but more importantly the music itself is delicate and very Lolita appropriate. It tells a great story through lyrics and melody. You'll truly never want this song to end, at least I never do.

4. The Spell - Alphabeat

I've spoken of Alphabeat before, but I can't get enough of their Euro-Pop energy. The Spell is one of their singles and is perhaps my favorite. It grooves and moves like no other and will definitely get you in that magic like mood for Lolita.

5. Gumdrops - The Smittens

Though short, "Gumdrops" is one of the cutest songs in history and probably my favorite song to whistle in the elevator these days. It has an equally cute video to match and overall The Smittens can light a room with their happy go lucky sense of music. This is the sort of happiness I love getting when wearing Lolita and "Gumdrops" just puts me in that frame of mind.

What songs make you ready to frill? I need more tunes to get my going so tell me.

This Lolita Day I also plan on wearing something extra summery and probably wearing my favorite dress, Meta's Cherry Gingham. But maybe I'll change my mind? Probably but for now thats the choice! Oh Lolita Day, what fun you'll be ~

Otakon 2011: Are You Going?

Now that the suppose threat of "The Rapture" is over, I can talk about this with pride! My favorite time of year is coming ever so fast, Otakon: The East Coast's Premiere Anime Convention (July 29th - August 1st!). What does one do at Otakon? The answer is simple, have a blast beyond compare. This convention seems to celebrate both the newer anime fans and the older anime fans (like myself) and also, for those who read this blog, it's very Lolita friendly. For awhile, it would have the occasional Lolita related event, last year was a turn for the epic where everyday had something Lolita related. Now this year definitely has some shoes to fill, but we can dream that it could be better or just as good.

For me, I will hopefully be presenting a panel about "Lolitas in the Media", so please keep your fingers crossed that this happens. It will be a hilarious look at the idea and I hope that if it does happen you'll come, and get prizes if you do come!

Also, it seems an old favorite will be back as well, a fashion show perhaps? I believe so!

Iconic Love Letter: Paul Williams

Last couple of posts have either been about a songwriter or something nostalgic, and this post is going to have the amazing combination of being about both! Today I'll be discussing probably the most underrated songwriter ever, one that you probably know more then you think and will probably want to dig into right away after reading this (or that is my hope). I give you an Iconic Love Letter to my favorite songwriter, Paul Williams!

Now, just like your reaction might have been to Rufus Wainwright: What the hell does this guy have to do with Lolita Fashion? Simple, just like Rufus he provides a great soundtrack. But unlike Rufus's sad and more moody music, Paul provides a variety of emotions and types of lyrical stories within his songwriting abilities. Now you're probably scratching your head going "I don't know anything this guy has worked on." You'll be surprised to know that you probably do more then you think. For instances, ever wondered who wrote the song "The Rainbow Connection" from the Muppet Movie? Paul did. Paul is actually responsible for many of the songs from the Muppets catalog, my favorite being his work on A Muppet Christmas Carol.

Paul is no stranger to many genres, related to movies or just music as a whole. My favorite work of his overall would be "Phantom of the Paradise" (if interested, check out a review I did of the movie on the blog Twenty Four Lies Per Second) for which he wrote the entire soundtrack and played the villain Swan. He also wrote a ton of songs for the Carpenters and was almost cast as a member of the nostalgia group The Monkees (for whom he also wrote songs for!) Paul's also a bit of an actor, starring in the film mentioned above along with "Battle for the Planet of the Apes" and in all of the "Smokey and the Bandit" films! He also wrote the scores for many children's movie, including one of my favorites "The Secret of Nimh"!

But the best part of Paul Williams is just when he is indeed himself and brings about a sort of silly charm that is so attractive in so many ways. It's the kind of charm that I find myself loving about Lolita, it's oddness is it's overall appeal. For example, Paul is one of the shortest men in music, which he mentions a lot when he made his appearance on the Muppet Show in Season 1. He seems like someone that wouldn't be that interesting, but in fact is so complex that you can't stop being interested in him. I think this is the sort of reaction people get when they find out normal looking people like ourselves have this life where we wear Lolita Fashion, which is so interesting beyond even our own understanding.

Paul carries that very similar idea that like Lolita Fashion, he's very surprising and not one to judge right off the bat. No one could believe the guy that wrote songs for The Muppets also wrote songs for The Scissor Sisters and Dexter's Laboratory! So for that alone Paul Williams is by far someone you should check out and feel that he is in fact one full of interesting surprises. This month on LVF, you'll hear some of his songs pop on here and again along with some other Muppet's related classics (Is that a hint I hear of a future post?...maybe!)

But how does one go about and bring a bit of Paul Williams into your Lolita life? Here's some tips!

Paul seems to have a thing for big glasses! Pick up a cool pair of your own. I'm personally in love with any vintage looking shades with big frames like the ones on UrbanOutfitters.com.

That ipod feeling a bit boring these days? Why not invest in a record player and buy yourself one of Paul's albums in vinyl. I can't express how much better music sounds in this form, really it's an experience. Check out these old school styled babies.

Buy yourself a vest in a dust color palette to go with your usual outfit that needs a bit of love and spicing up! I can't get enough of the ones on ModCloth.com! Granted they might seem a bit more on the Mori Girl side, but why not add something a bit different to the mix?

Why not have a musical themed picnic meet up! Go to your favorite park (that is music playing friendly of course!) and have everyone bring their favorite CD to play and make a special meal themed to their favorite music. Maybe you can surprise your friends and bring a Paul Williams album and make "Rainbow Connection" cookies with M&Ms and sprinkles?

So I'm pretty sure by now you have to be digging some aspect of Mr.Williams and his amazing career. Paul's lyrical power of whimsy and fantasy really makes his music amazing and really is catchy in a way that is good, unlike most of the music that comes out these days. It's playful, sometimes dark, but always intelligent and fun to listen to. Go check out Paul's stuff, and trust me you'll love it.

May of Epic! LVF's upcoming events!

(First of all, apologies for having little to no posts the last two months - I'll be graduating in a month and school, along with the Tribeca Film Festival here in New York, has kept me very busy. But now LVF is back baby and it missed you a lot!)

This May is going to be one of the best months for myself, ever. Why? Because of some epic events coming up for myself that I just have to talk about here on LVF.

First up, May 1st was the recording of something special: Glacee's (the upcoming lolita zine) Podcast Series! I also believe this to be the first official Lolita podcast, unless there is one going on that I haven't heard of (anyone?). Hopefully, if everything goes according to plan, this will be published on iTunes for everyone to enjoy. I can't give all the details out yet, but expect the release of the first episode to soon after the recording!

But what am I even more excited for? The Animal Party Meet Up on May 21st. Oh boy, is this going to be awesome. A group of us are getting together to go to the infamous Bronx Zoo, covered in our best animal inspired coordinates! I personally plan on going as My Little Pony's Pinkie Pie for pastel fun all around. There will be tons of prizes and lots of photo opportunities! Can't wait!

Iconic Love Letter #5: Nostalgic Toys

Oh Nostalgia, how I love to visit the realms of this magical kingdom every chance I get. From everything that came of my childhood like music, movies and books - the thing that rings the most nostalgic for me is the products of childhood itself: Nostalgic Toys. Now I don't know about you, but I grew up in the 90's and enjoyed the entire decade to it's fullest. At the time though, I still was embracing the toys of the 80's that were still cool and adorable as heck.

So which toys caught my fancy and still ring a happy bell in my heart now some 15 years later? Let's take a walk down the pastel colored play room and check out what we find in the toy box! (This also will include nostalgic commercials for the toys!)

The Huggabunch

Imagine if you would a world of such fluff it would make Mickey Mouse almost throw up in fear of just how ridiculously cute this world is. Which world is this? The world of the Huggabunch of course! Huggabunch was a line of toys based on the idea of these little creatures that were powered by hugs. There were tons of different Huggabunch characters, my personal favorites being Huggins and Tickles (Ugh, what I would give to have a fluffy purple afro).

Though interestingly enough I never owned a real Huggabunch, I actually was more impacted by the Huggabunch TV Special as a kid. My mom would rent the tape over and over again for me as a kid. With the fear of a Grandma being "put to pasture" and a scary Wolly Mammoth (yes, this is all in one movie), Huggabunch had the unique quality of putting the fear of god in me AND making me ridiculously happy. Now I'm on a quest to own an actual Huggabunch, for nostalgic purposes.

My Little Pony

Did you really think I was going to not mention My Little Pony? A staple for girls everywhere of the 80's, 90's and still today - My Little Pony is one of the most successful toy franchises ever. Personally I wasn't the biggest My Little Pony girl on the block, but I had a few and really appreciate how they cater to my pastel and sweet things that I love. I'm personally a big fan of Pinkie Pie specifically, though she's one of the newer ones. Either way, you can't go wrong with My Little Pony.

Magical Girl Anime Toys

I can't express more how much I love toys of Magical Girl anime series. Sailor Moon is a key example of the epic level one can produce toys, the best being those super rare RPG toys. I am lucky enough to be the owner of at least one of the original wands from the first run of the series, but I am definitely on the hunt for more of these buggers regardless of their ridiculous price tag. I also have a small collection of similar toys from Magic Knight Rayearth and Cardcaptor Sakura. I'm also a big fan of collecting the keychains and figures from the series, and I have a few dolls also. Overall these toys make me want to go on adventures and dream, as it seems many Lolita's agree with me since I see a lot of sweet girls carrying the same items!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

All right I'll admit it, Power Rangers were my favorite toys out of all these mentioned. I had a thing for shows where young teens/kids could beat up bad guys and save the day. So unlike my other female counterparts at school, this is where I took a turn and did my own more tom boyish thing. Power Rangers gave me an interest into martial arts and girl power all around. Kimberly and Trini were perhaps the coolest girls in the world to me and I wish I was them back then more then anything. Now I still love Power Rangers, and I still look for all the cool toys from the show that I can. My boyfriend just gave me a huge figure of the Falcon Zord and I can't explain the huge grin it gave me big time.

First off, it's best to look at Lolita and see what happiness it brings you, just like your favorite toys from your childhood. Just like your toys, you can feel yourself growing old from Lolita - but also like these toys they'll creep on back into your life and you'll never want to let go. Lolita is something that even some who grow apart from, but can't you forget it once it comes into your life. Remember the magic it brings you and you'll never want it to go away! Bring the love that these toys gave you into every aspect of your life, even your fashion sense!

Iconic Love Letter: Rufus Wainwright

Throughout my life, I've been around musicians. My mom is a huge beyond amazing music buff, while my father himself is a musician. Both the Uncle's on my mom side played in bars, and I met all of their friends when taken to such occasions as a little one. Of course, I wasn't the coolest kid in the bunch back then, though I did sport a neat glitter coat from time to time in those days. One of the musical families that's always been in my own family in a real life basis has been The Wainwrights. Living only a few short minutes from the majority of their homes, various members of the Wainwright family have come in and out of my life. The one that sticks the most prominently to myself is Sloan, Aunt to our iconic subject today!

Sloan went to high school with my mom's side of the family and has been a part of their lives ever since. Because of that I was introduced to all of the Wainwright's music. One day though, something changed drastically for me. Aside from the careless tune I'd hear at the tender single digit ages, one song brought something in me that made me connect very deeply to one particular Wainwright. I'm sure all of you have heard Rufus's cover of Across The Universe, which changed my musical appreciation forever. Today on Iconic Love Letter, you will be introduced to Rufus Wainwright.

Rufus Wainwright, Son of Loudon Wainwright III, was born July 22nd. He grew up in a strange combination of suburban live style with some riches to be had. One of the first big breaks of his was at age 12, starring in a small film called "Tommy Tricker and The Stamp Traveler" (link here) in which he wrote one of his first songs "I'm-a Runnin"(This would lead him to be skilled at writing songs for other films later in the future). Even then you could tell he was incredibly complex and different from most kids his age. He slowly would become one of the most talented singers and songwriters of his generation. But wait... why is he being talked about as an icon on a Lolita Fashion blog?

Well, if you can imagine, Rufus is one of the most lolita appropriate songwriters. Though sometimes sad, his lyrics are filled with whimsical stories of fashion, quests of love, and most of his early lyrics relate to fairy tales. The best? He even wrote an opera - which takes much skill! Ready to learn my favorite things about this icon of mine and soon to be one of yours? Lets go!

It's easy to say that I first fell in love with Rufus because of his relationship to music. He makes some of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard in my life, along with the most beautiful lyrics. But even beyond that, Rufus is someone to study, as well as to study his icons. One of my favorite albums of Rufus's isn't even his own music. Rufus in 2006 decided to re-create a famous Judy Garland concert, which resulted in the Live album "Rufus! Rufus! Rufus!". He sings circles around these classic tunes, especially my favorite shown in this clip. But for those new to Rufus, here is a small list of my three favorite albums and the best tracks on them for your listening pleasure.

Rufus Wainwright (self titled album) - "Foolish Love"
Want One - "I Don't Know What It Is"
Release The Stars - "Going To A Town"

All of these songs have very deep and emotional meanings, but absolutely beautiful to listen to. "Foolish Love" though has some of the best images out of all his songs.

He has so many more songs that speak volumes in their meaning, much of which are based on person experiences. "Dinner at Eight" being the best example, about his depressing relationship with his father. Though for me, my favorite lyric comes from "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk (Reprise)"

"still there's not a show on my back

holes or a friendly intervention

i'm just a little bit heiress, a little bit irish

a little bit tower of pisa whenever i see you

so please be kind if i'm a mess

cigarettes and chocolate milk"

Rufus always continues to inspire me lyrically and musically. He even puts elements of other famous tunes that you know and makes them have a modern dance oriented twist. My favorite example is "In Between My Legs" where he takes the famous "Phantom of the Opera" theme and gives it a bit of flavor and epic build up in the song itself. Speaking of Opera's what about his own? It's called "Prima Dona", which works so well for Rufus. I myself have not seen the show, but if you're interested you can find the details out here.

Rufus is known for more then just being an incredible singer, but also a man of amazing dress. If one was to take the elements of Elton John and mix them with the class of Carry Grant, you'd get basically the form at which Rufus is in terms of style. Rufus will sometimes come out in a special colored suit or on occasion will come dressed as Judy Garland a-la "Come On Get Happy" era. Either way, Rufus is both dressed up and casual, but either way looks polished to a T on every occasion. For that he should be given complete respect.

Rufus is known for doing lots of things amazing behind the scenes as well as on stage. Like mentioned, he has an incredible musical family that every time during Holiday season put together a special group concert in New York and England. Rufus has does a lot of charity concerts, mostly for Gay Rights organizations and AIDs funds. He also does a lot of local work for New York foundations and does local community shows to support them. Rufus has also be involved with numerous interesting relationships, including his friendship with designer Marc Jacobs. He's also friends with tons of celebrities, but in my opinion always looks better then all of them put together. But the best of all is his marriage to his partner Jörn Weisbrodt and his daughter Katherine.

I love Rufus more then I ever thought I would back so many years ago. He's incredible in what he does and in turn does it better then anyone else that attempts to duplicate his style. Though I'm not sure if I met Rufus back in my childhood, I like to image that the people that told me I did were right. I would have like to have thought I'd encounter such a magical and fantastic person such as Rufus. He's one of the those people that only comes once in a while and when he does you cherish him forever.

Dress Up Time #11: The Last Unicorn

Recently I was given a request by a friend to do a Dress Up Time article, specifically on a story with whom I hold very dearly to my heart, The Last Unicorn. Now overall, this entire franchise is pretty spectacular.The story is extremely engaging and have stood the test of time at this point. It tells the story of a unicorn who believes she is the only unicorn in the world left, and to see if she can find anymore of her kind she goes out on a quest. It turns from a "lone wolf" adventure, to a buddy trip and then a dramatic romance. Did I mention the original material was written in the 60's? It's just fantastic.

So what is the subject of this post then? We will be covering the complex two in one character deal of The Unicorn/Amalthea. This will be based more on the movie, since out of the two, that is what I am most familiar with (even if the book is my favorite book of all time.) All of the characters of story bring about a realism that most fantasy characters don't posses to me. Maybe it was due to the time that it was written, but The Last Unicorn is unique in its ability to connect with these creatures that exist elsewhere and only in our imaginations.

But what about our main character, The Unicorn/Amalthea? She's seems one dimensional at first, but becomes a complex layered innocent female creature. She is then later transformed into a human girl and learns the emotions of regret and love. When transformed into Amalthea, she is dressed in the most beautiful of lavender shades and falls for the prince of the castle (Played by my old man crush, Jeff Bridges). Overall, it's easy to be jealous of her style and her adventure minus the regret part - but we love this Unicorn no matter what! Now, how do I dress like this amazing characters? Here is a unique La Vida Frills take on how to bring some whimsy and Unicorn flare to your outfit!

The key thing to remember when bringing Amalthea into your outfit is that she is a creature born into nature, so your outfit should include a flower or woods like theme. I chose to base this outfit on her lavender color palette that shows up more as the movie progresses! I first chose as a dress piece Angelic Pretty's Sugar Pansy Baby-Doll JSK in Lavender. This is probably my favorite piece from the brand so far this year, and matches the world of the Unicorn so well. You can also go with a cream or super white colored JSK as well, though I find lavender to be more fun and magical!

Then you want to go out and find a lavender and white combo cardigan of some sort. This specific cardigan I've seen in several variations over the years, but was found on a UK website called ColorfulFashion.com. Make sure it makes as closely to your dress color as possible.

Next comes the accessories. I found a bunch of Unicorn headbands and headdresses all over the net, but this specific one I found on etsy (link here) is beyond the prettiest. If you can't get a unicorn horn, I recommend making a crown of flowers instead that'd match your dress color. You can pair that with Unicorn shaped or decorated hair clips to continue with the theme. Also on Etsy I found a beautiful Unicorn cameo, which perfectly matched the dress (link here). The ring is from Locketship, who has an entire Unicorn collection (link here).

Don't forget to get an adorable purse to match! I chose one of the infamous silver heart purses from Forever 21 (inspired by Betsey Johnson's original design.) I recommend also going for a unicorn themed bag, one that looks vintage in maybe a cream tone if you aren't one for sparkle.

To finish the outfit off, pick up a pair of flower decorated shoes. These specific shoes come from my favorite guilty pleasure, Irregular Choice. Then chose an adorable yet simple pair of lavender colored tights. If you can't find the right shade, go for either a white color or a simple tiny flower pattern.

Now that you have your outfit, I recommend getting yourself a copy of the original novel by Peter S. Beagle (his fan site here) and go take yourself on a magical adventure through the woods as you read this enchanting story. When you're done on your quest, go make something yummy to eat and watch the movie as well! Either way, I'm sure you'll feel just as magnificent as a Unicorn. It's perfect for spring that is just in bloom!

Dress Up Time #10: Red Riding Hood (2011)

Red Riding Hood, a new retelling of the classic fairy tale was released to theaters this past weekend. In honor of the new film, LVF gives you an new entry in our Dress Up Time Series! With the new version, the entire story and characters get a fresh look! Amanda Seyfried in my mind is the perfect actress for the role. With own set of "big eyes" and beautiful innocent complexion, she is the character with a yet more grown up look. But how to achieve the Grandmothers Cottage Visit appeal? Let's go deeper into the story of this blondie!

First, it's best to know as much about the original and central character, as well as this new version. The original story was that of a young girl who is asked to go on a trip to her grandmother's house. What was just a run of the mill walk in the woods turns into a deadly run for Red Riding-Hood's life as she's continuously chased and hunted by a "Big Bad" Wolf. In this new version, the story is made with a more hardcore thriller motif of using the element of real Werewolves. Did I mention it also has a dangerously cool priest played by Gary Oldman?! (yeah, I have an odd crush on him.)

But whats truly interesting about this story is how it has been taken into the world of fashion and especially lolita. From Baby's embroidered print from 2007 to Putumayo's gothic iconic image, Red Riding Hood has been used countless times and she never looks the same. Personally my favorite is the Baby print, mostly for the cute chibi-like designs of the characters all over the print and all of the items that came along with the series, my personal favorite being the cardigan.

But what exactly makes her so interesting? Well, I think we can all connect with having being sent out by our parents to go on a small journey or trip to do something that's much more grown up then we have ever done in our past. Sometimes the adventure goes well, while in this case for our heroine it doesn't exactly go as planned. We can account the "Big Bad Wolf" to many moments and people in our lives, from the bully at school that seems to ruin everything, to even a test that seems to get in the way of you passing a class. There is always something in the way of you getting to your goal, whether it be Grandmother's Cottage or otherwise.

But how exactly do you capture a modern Rori take on Red Riding Hood and incorporate it into your coordinate? Here's an idea!

First off, bit a very simple colored JSK. I chose a cream color, but even a very soft blue (which she wears in the movie) works very well. You want the Red Hood to stand out the most, so don't wear anything too complicated in terms of the dress. The hoodie to wear with the outfit of course is the most important. I chose Alice and the Pirates Red Knitted Style Hoodie, which is ridiculously comfortable and beautiful. Then, pick a basket in which you'll take to Grandmothers house. You can decorate it with tons of Wolf and Red Riding Hood themed brooches and pins. I found this Etsy shop to have a lot of cute ones. Then, chose a tame but beautiful rose or cream colored pair of tights. I chose a real rose patterned pair, but even soft bold colors would work. Chose a pair of comfortable almost slipper like boots, which are worn in the film. Top it off with a pretty Wolf themed necklace, which I found here. Then you're off to find that nasty ol' wolf!

So there you go, the lowdown on how to achieve the Red Riding Hood look! I also bet you're curious if the movie is any good? Sadly, it isn't great - but I found it ridiculously silly and had some attempts at some interesting plot twists. It's more a rental, but it does have some absolutely beautiful cinematography. Don't waste your popcorn movie money on it though, just save it for later. Though, it is worth mentioning Gary Oldman rides a pretty epic white horse!

LVF Update: Style All Over!

So sadly I've been away from the world of LVF for a bit. Don't worry though, your pink leopard print girl is on the case and back with a push of frill power! Now, let's get ourselves a full serving of the latest and newest styles and releases that I'm freaking out over.

First off, can we talk about how cute all the new things on Meta's website are right now? Granted, maybe they aren't suited to everyone's style, but I am totally digging on these vintage inspired prints and color combos. The best - there is a pretty epic sale going on right now! Most of the newest prints are 20% off, so go check them out and see if there is anything that fits your fancy.
I can't explain how much I am in love with Tarina Tarantino's new collection, Tilt-A-Whirl. Inspired by a Coney Island obsessed circus of Pink Elephants, Blue Horses and Yummy Candy Treats - this collection has spring sweet lolita coordinates written all over it! Though on the expensive side of Tarantino, this is definitely worth saving over. The items have an almost hand sewn quality of decadence and a unique combination of beads and colors. Go and see what circus of an outfit you could do with these pretties!
In my secret non-LVF life, I work at my local Bath and Body Works. I love this store, filled with tons of delicious fragrances that have now, because of my job, become a big part of my life. These are actually good smells that can changed and mixed easily, with tons of fun combination's and tons of items to layer on-top to get the best smell period. These two are my current favorites for the spring and get add to your outfit: Secret Wonderland and the newly revised Cherry Blossom. Take it from an expert, these two are a lolita's best friend this spring.

Not on the style of now, but on the future, I got a fun gift to pull out of my bag for all of you to get excited about. LVF Update: Tokyo Fashion Festa 2 featuring Putumayo

First off, Thank you for helping me reach 160 subscribers! This is pretty awesome, gotta say. Now onto the even cooler news....

La Vida Frill's will be attending something special this week!

Tokyo Fashion Festa has come back around after it's successful brand filled showcase last year. This time, the group will be showcasing Japanese subculture and Cosplay style. Though I'm not much for cosplay myself, I'm going there for one specific reason: Putumayo will be the showcased brand, and I can't help but say they're slowly becoming one of my favorite brands. Sometimes their clothes can be beautiful and other times dangerous, but it's always fun and full of spice! They have some really cute items for both the ladies and the gentlemen, what more could you love?

The best part is in addition to the show, Putumayo will have it's own booth where they'll be selling some of their latest items. I just got a hold on the newest plaid/cat print series and I'm hoping I can get a hold on a couple of other new items!

At the show, there will also be a tea/treats reception along with live tutorials on make up and more fun stylish things! I'm very interested to see how the event will turn out and even more excited to see new things from Putumayo and maybe get my hands on taking some adorable pictures for a new project in the works!

The Princes Of Cinema To The Rescue

Oh Valentines Day. Though a portion of us can celebrate this holiday in the fashion it is marketed to, the other section can only sit in their rooms and feel a bit on the outside of things. Maybe it's because you're busy with school, a job, or there just isn't the right fellow or miss that has crossed your magical path, either way Valentine's day just isn't for you. So, what does one do in such a situation? Though currently I'm not in that place myself, I have spent most of my V-Day's either alone or most definitely single. When the big ol' day comes around, I do something fun and grand: pop on a selection of movies starring my favorite men or princes as we will call them, the ones that make my heart a flutter and have a small day dream for fun!
So who are these dashing gentlemen who I speak of that cure my love blues? Well lets take a dive to find out!
Warning: These are my specific selections, so some of them might not be your fancy.
Edward Norton
Movies to Watch: The Illusionist and The Painted Veil
I've been a fan of Mr.Norton for a very long time. He has this very classic film look to him, yet a complex edge that lets him dive into many specific roles that are never the same as the other. From a Neo-Nazi, A Priest, and The Hulk - Mr.Norton is nothing to give the short hand to. If you're going to get yourself lost in a romantic adventure with Norton, there are many films to chose from. I chose The Illusionist because of it's simple style of film yet very interesting story (it's one of my favorite short stories ever). The Painted Veil on the other hand is very complex and drawn out, with an ending that leaves you to think deeply about the way relationships work, set in the beautiful landscape of China, which he also produced. You should also check out Keeping The Faith, which though not frilly is ridiculously sweet and tugs my New York heart deeply.

Ralph Fiennes
Movies to Watch: The English Patient and The End of the Affair
Oh boy, I definitely have a thing for Ralph Fiennes. He has the edge and craft of being a unique actor, who also is ridiculously good looking. He turns characters that are creepy and demented on just the script and elevates them to a level of complex nature. But Ralph is also known for his numerous romantic leading roles. Yes, before he was Voldemort, Fiennes was the man to go to for romance in period films. Though I only chose two films, there are numerous to chose from. The English Patient gave Ralph his second Oscar nomination, which I think doesn't need anymore explaining on why you should see it (bring the tissues ladies!) and The End of the Affair is ridiculously intense, but so sweeping and dramatic, prepare for an emotional roller coaster. Fiennes has a lot to offer, so be ready!

Richard Chamberlain
Movies to Watch: The Slipper and The Rose and The Thorn Birds
Literally, Richard Chamberlain has played a handsome prince and to many in the 70's and 80's, he was that charming young man on both television and film. He's got the acting part down and has some great chemistry with his fellow actors. If you need your prince fix, see The Slipper and The Rose, a cute Rococo telling of Cinderella. Then check out the epic 80's mini-series, The Thorn Birds. Here Richard plays a priest in Australia, who guides an orphan girl into the right side of life. As she grows up though, Chamberlain's character begins to have feelings about her that change their lives forever. So go forth and get your Chamberlain on!

Gene Kelly
Movies to Watch: An American in Paris and Singing in the Rain
More in the mood for a dance in your heart? Then look no further then Gene Kelly, the American Dance god, in my opinion. This once working hard hero became the bad boy dancer to Fred Astaire's refined style in the 40's and 50's, making him a true icon. But it doesn't hurt that he is one of the most gorgeous men of his day and still stays in the minds of men and women everywhere as an all around classy fellow. Check out the classics mentioned above, but really you should see all his movies, especially all of the MGM musicals. No matter what, you can't go wrong with Kelly.

Fredric March
Movies to Watch: Death Takes a Holiday and I Married A Witch
My favorite actor in the world is this guy, Fredric March. He was a class act in his day. Playing odd roles along with tons of adorable romantic leads, March was way ahead of his time. But rather then recommending all of his serious work, check out all of these cute and fun little movies He made on the side. My first pick is Death Takes A Holiday, where March plays well, Death who falls in love with a beautiful rich girl and turns human (taking the part of a prince, no doubt!) for 3 days to win her heart. You should also check out the hilarious and silly I Married A Witch, where March plays a young politician whose part of a cursed family line that must now encounter the Witch that did the horrific act back in the 1600's. It's silly, fun, and romantic and stars hottie Veronica Lake. There's tons to look into when it comes to March.

Iconic Love Letter: RuPaul

February has just begun and if you are anywhere in the east coast you're probably already feeling the harsh effects of those winter blues. Though I'm a winter baby and snow usually perks me up - it's now becoming more ridiculous as time goes on and hopefully will stop having it's "storm a week" effect on us eventually. But are you really getting the blues from the chill? Well today on LVF, we're gonna celebrate someone absolutely fabulous! Need someone to look at that can turn your frown upside down? Look no further then our subject today, the #1 Drag Superstar in the world, RuPaul!

RuPaul is just one of those people that comes around once in a while and turns the established culture upside down and around in a 180 degree style and it's never the same again. She (or He, whichever you desire to call) is revolutionary and has brought the greatest things about gay and drag culture to the faces of America, with as much glitz and glamor then we could have ever imagined. Ru Paul is in one word, confidence. This why she needs to be celebrated.

Don't even get me started on Drag Race, which has slowly become my favorite TV currently on the air as we speak. This show keeps getting better with each season and never lets itself become a cliche. I think the best part of this show is how it treasures the ideals of self expression and individual empowerment. All of these Drag Queens are heroes to me, even if not all of them are my personal favorites. But why? Because they don't care what the outside world thinks of them and they themselves think that they are truly fabulous in their own way. This is something I think all of us, Lolitas and humans alone, can and should rinse and repeat in our own minds.

But what should you do to take the iconic inspiration of RuPaul from this post to your closet? Well actually, rather then the usual stick of some outfit ideas and places to shop, why not try a new frame of mind: Be Comfortable As Yourself. As Rori girls new and old, we are told time and time again that if you don't have confidence or believe in your own brand of fabulous, you might as well not be part of Lolita at all. I can say that without a doubt RuPaul is one of the most inspirational people to me in general for that reason. Haters will be hating on people like Ru forever and ever, which goes the same for us in the frills. But, does that change Ru or the girls of Drag Race? No and neither should it change you!

So with that in mind, go forth and sparkle on down the street with your own strut of love and devotion. I wish I could have RuPaul as president (wish I could say I made this picture.), so that America could be even better and more accepting then it is and maybe the world could be a little bit more too. But the only way to start that is by loving and accepting someone you probably know the best, yourself. As Ru says at the end of every Drag Race, "If you can't love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love somebody else?" Now, I say Amen to that and hopefully you do too.

Finding Your Style: Your Own Unique Take On Lolita

I've been into Lolita for almost 5 years now. Trust me, it has been a love affair as it's probably been for most of you. But, I can honestly say that it's definitely a journey into finding what your actual style is within the realm of the fashion itself. Sure, you could pick a "style" like sweet, gothic or classic, but can you find your style within it. It's taken me a very long time to truly find my style when it comes to this fashion culture and now I'd like to share my style with you.

Let's start off with the beginning. Oddly, you wouldn't be able to tell at all, but I started my frilly days off as a Gothic girl. Though I still love the details of gothic style, since my usual non lolita style is a more all black look (not gothic but...dark colors?) I try to dress a bit differently when in the frills compared to my western street fashion counter part. I think many can consider the first step of most lolitas "the old school step", but at least for me it was more on the ita side (yes, yes, I was an ita! Don't deny you were one also, come on!)

Sadly, we've all taken the plunge into Lolita fashion sometimes without the complete understanding of it. Take me for example, I got into the fashion because of Mana from Malice Mizer. I don't think I really need to explain much of why I admired him or why I even dared to dress similar to him, but maybe it was my love affair with my own collection of dolls at the time and wanting to look similar to them - and I'm really not going to continue on this since I'm pretty sure 95% of you have the same response.

But after having the incredible realization that this fashion took real dedication and work (No, really!?), I took a bit of a back step on

it and let myself collect items until I could actually make a decent outfit. Trial and error outfits took place one right after the other, but finally I saw the light. No no, not the heavenly like, The Rori Light! (I honestly think I saw Momoko holding a hand out to me with this one!) The realization that I found the style that called out to me the most: Sweet Lolita.

But what exactly draws one to this style (which has been the most popular for the last 3 or so years.) that had me believing in Lolita once more as something that was made for me to wear. I've even seen pictures of me as a baby in clothes are definitely pieces of what would become lolita, especially those bonnets my mother forced upon me at such a young age. Sweet Lolita completed that gap in my fashion heart for me that craved pastels in a bell shaped dress form, that I felt fit me the best in the world of fashion for me. I had never felt so beautiful, so adorable or so healthy looking then I did the first time I put on my first brand dress: A little polka dot number from Angelic Pretty in a stark red and white color palette!

Since then it's been completely a romance of absolute adorable and cuteness that has made me a sweet lolita girl for life. The use of animals, ridiculously high calorie looking sweets and beautiful shades of pink have made me dedicated enough to want to be buried in it, just like in the picture next to the text. I can't contain myself when I see the newest Angelic Pretty print, in all it's sparkle like wonder, it's almost like the feeling you get on Christmas day looking at the new presents under the tree. Such prints as Pastel Ala Mode and Dreamy Dollhouse have given me such fantasies of fun with friends and adventures into new places.

I get the same feeling from Baby as well. Baby has this great sort of vintage take on what Angelic Pretty tends to make more modern and or slightly tacky (in the best way possible though, seriously.) Even the newest prints like my favorite Twinkle Princess Dream are just well, a dream in themselves (I'm dying for the navy or pink version!)

Then fast forward to a little under 3 months ago. I step into a new world of style, that is what has ultimately lead me to writing this in the first place. It's best to understand during my teen years I was obsessed with Punk fashion. Joey Ramone and Debbie Harry were my idols and I dreamed of being just as cool as them by dressing in every bit I could get from Trash and Vaudeville at the time. Quickly I learned that the ones called "punks" were never ones to identify themselves as such and therefore I banished the thoughts from my mind. Fast forward to the point previously mentioned and I re-discovered my love for a very under appreciated brand: Putumayo.

Putumayo can't and shouldn't even be just connected to punk lolita. It, to me, is the only true brand that can call itself a sweet punk style brand. It mixes the two perfectly. It'll have pieces that focus on fairy tale themes turned upside down. One of my favorites was a theme of cutsews featuring Little Red Riding Hood holding a bloody knife but looking absolutely cute doing so (odd? of course!) Maybe it's because I'm obsessed with plaid, but this brand speaks to me like no other and I'm now on a mission: With every coordinate to capture my love of both sweet and punk to perfection.

The only person I've found do this perfectly is one of the old school girls, Nana Kitade. I actually haven't heard much from Ms. Kitade in recent years, but back about 4 years ago she was one of my idols. She always knew the right way to blend Baby The Stars Shine Bright with spiked bracelets and skulls in this way that almost looked elegant. I remember that moment when I first saw Nana in person, carrying her Baby Bunny Bag and sitting with it, arms all around. It's probably one of the most inspirational images ever for me, and I want to carry that tradition on in my style!

So then, what is exactly my style? It's a mixture of sparkles, Barbies, The 80's with your rock n roll mischief and a lot of confidence. It involves hats, clips and a lot of patterned bows. Give me different kinds of solids, maybe even a print or too that makes you think of the bitter taste of dark chocolate. If Debbie Harry or Cyndi Lauper was lolita, would they approve? If they do then I'd wear it for sure. Take any combination of red plaid or pink and black and you've got a winning result of something fun yet interesting: me. Now give me some pink leopard print and let's go!

Iconic Love Letter: 80's/90's Magical Girl Series

Growing up as a child of the 90's, I was fully submerged into the new obsession of the young female gender: The Magical Girl Show! Granted, some of these shows can be considered cheesy, silly and sometimes just plain odd - but do we care? No! As long as there is a character with a cute sense of style, fun powers we dreamed about and some cute guy to crush on, we were set for fun! But wait, Style!? Inspiration!? From a kids television show!? But of course! My absolute favorite part of these shows was the look of each character, and I wanted to dress and be like them all so badly. So, in tribute to these fantastic series that we've all grown up with, I decided to make them my Iconic Love Letter for this week! So hop on your magic wand and let's get started!

Let's start off with my favorite series of the 80's, Jem! If you don't know about Jem, let me tell you that you are missing something, as the iconic heroine would say, Truly Outrageous! Jem is the story of Jerrica, who has just been given the complete ownership of her Father's record company after his passing. She also has to be in charge of an orphanage for little girls. She's so stressed and on top of that, she's dating the cutest guy Rico! What is she going to do!? One day, Jerrica is given the power to transform into Jem, her rock-n-roll goddess alter ego! New, Jerrica must decide between which life to lead: Her own or the one of Jem. The series has some of the coolest and catchiest songs I've ever heard, along with the most epic and tackiest outfits ever. But what makes Jem so cool is that it knows how silly it is, which makes you want to be in the world of the series even more! I mean, I'd love to transform myself into a pink haired rock star, wouldn't you?
Next up, we have Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders (also known as Princess Starla in other countries). The plot revolves around an alternative version of Avalon (think Rainbow Bright mixed with Samurai Troopers in terms of style), where people who are given the magic of Merlin can protect the world with The Crown Jewels and chosen animal companions. Our star is Princess Gwenevere, who is now destined to defeat the evil Lady Kale. She also has two allies, known as the Jewel Riders, named Tamara and Fallon! My favorite character of the series was Tamara, considered to be the oldest and prettiest of the Jewel Riders. She carries the heart stone and is known for taking care of the animals of Avalon. Maybe it was the British accent or the fact that she's the reason I'm obsessed with Mint and Pink together, but Tamara is a class act all on her own. Also, who doesn't want to ride on a pet Unicorn named Sunstar? (my favorite of the horses!) I highly recommend this if you haven't seen it!
Now, you can't go without mentioning the popular Magical Girl anime series that were huge at this time as well. Though there are a lot to chose from, I wanted to give special shout outs to my favorites - Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon (S and SuperS being my favorite seasons!). I'm pretty sure that anyone and everyone reading this blog knows of at least one of both of these series, and I'd manage to say you even are a big fan of them too. It was hard to ignore the success of these shows, but especially Sailor Moon here in the states. Though, we were never truly treated to seeing the entirety of these shows (but at least we were given Cardcaptor Sakura uncut many years later), they still are incredible and hard to not adore.
Cardcaptor Sakura is one of those unique series that really, in my mind, has no flaws. It's also important to note that this is probably the closest we've come to having a Lolita super hero of any sort! You can't deny the fact how excited you were to see Sakura's new fighting outfit each episode, created specially by her friend Tomoyo! I'm also a sucker for anything with angel wings, and this just made that aspect even cuter for myself. I have so many favorite outfits and moments from this show, allowing myself to never grow away from it completely.
... and don't even get me started on Sailor Moon. It's hard to clearly define the impact this series has had on me and the millions that have watched it, but it's probably in the time-line of things why I'm even writing this blog today. Sailor Moon was the first anime series I ever saw, watched every episode, and know every plot line by heart. It also brought my down the track line to learning about Japanese pop culture and now, you know the rest of the story. Sailor Moon is also in this unique category of complete pure and fabulous timeless story telling. Sure, there are your occasional filler episodes (there are in EVERY series, honestly.), but they are charming when you get to know all the characters - which I almost consider friends after seeing them for the past 16 years of my life. If you're going to rewatch any part of the series, I recommend the Pegasus story arch along with the R series movie! They're romantic, funny and touching!
Side note: Sailor Chibi-Moon isn't my favorite, Sailor Saturn is actually!
So now you want to incorporate these into your style, but how?
Here is my own personal outfit based on these magical ladies!
First off, pick an empire waist cut JSK or OP. Make sure that it creates a sort of round cuteness effect, and looks a bit casual so you can run around in it. I'd also suggest going with a cutsew or parka that has a sailor/peter pan collar. This is to go along with the sailor uniform inspired style from the anime shows, which are all based around this school uniform style. Next, I'd chose a pair of more comfortable but cute shoes, like these AP Engineer Boots in Pink! I'd also go with a bag that resembles a school styled one, especially since most of these characters are in high school or young adults! Make sure to pick out a cool brooch that looks magical girl inspired, like this one I found on etsy that's based on a Sailor Moon design. Remember to get a big and adorable bow to finish the look, see if you can find one with stars or sequin in it. Even though this coordinate is almost entirely AP and Mint/Pink, you can do it whatever way you like - if Sailor Moon would wear it, then go for it!

LVF Celebrates 150 Followers and Birthday (pt.1)

LVF has something to celebrate! We've reached 150 followers, which I happened to have seen had happened just around my actual birthday! But how indeed did I celebrate my birthday? Well I'll tell you it was truly something fabulous. My boyfriend had in a series of events, surprised me by taking me to the local big market store, then to Reb Lobster for lunch and then... 15 of my friends were all waiting for me at my house! It was such a shock and surprise in so many ways, I literally was really speechless for a good 20 minutes

It was absolutely magical! I even got some really neat presents, including a lot of gift cards and even some brand, a Metamorphose necklace to be exact! I loved all my presents, from the handmade to the adorably personal, it all meant the world to me and the best present of all was having my friends there with me. Look out for another post with some present pictures and more adventures!

Iconic Love Letter: Tarina Tarantino

I always like to try something new, and with that I give you a new series of posts called Iconic Love Letter! Each post will center around someone that I consider to be a style icon. Whether it be a designer, model or even a normal lolita girl - someone always inspires me and I want to share that inspiration with you! So, who is the center of attention when it comes to our first post? Well I wanted to share some light on someone that inspires and ends up in every single one of my outfits, Tarina Tarantino!

If you haven't heard of Tarina, well let me sing her praises! Mrs.Tarantino is a alternative jewelry designer from California. Obsessed with pink, Hello Kitty, Barbie and everything else girly - Tarina takes her own spin on classic icons that we all love and makes them into funky wearable jewelry and pieces that are handmade and cherished the world over. With her own beautiful pink hair, Tarina is herself an icon of both fashion and the proper way of upholding a business. To me though, there's many things about Tarina, aside from being my go to style girl, that I adore about her.
First of all, she has no holds about being herself in every way possible. Tarina isn't considered the skinny model girl that everyone dreams of being and especially in an industry that strives for that, she just let's it roll of her shoulder and stays her fabulous healthy self. As someone that isn't super small and can't fit into every single piece of the latest fashions, and tall as well, Tarina solves all those problems and gives me inspiration to dress for my body type and make it even more incredible then someone else 50 pounds lighter then me. Tarina also is probably the reason why I'm a lolita (gasp). Tarina embraces Japanese Pop Culture and brings it to the public in a perfect and lovely way, something that Gwen Stefani didn't catch on to as easily. She even has a Lolita collection, including Hello Kitty dressed in head to toe Gothic and Sweet Lolita!
Did I mention my favorite thing about Tarina? Well she happens to be good friends with two of my other favorite style icons, Maki and Asuka of Angelic Pretty. Maybe one day they'll do a collection together (one can only dream!). Me and Tarina even own the same dress (as shown above), Dreaming Macaroon in Black (OP style), which is one of my favorite dresses in my closet! Another cool thing about Tarina? She also has her own exclusive Barbie Doll (dressed in a combination to tie for of Pink and Mint!) and has her own recently released make up line at Sephora! My favorite items from the make up line are the Lip Gloss in Disco Nap and the Primer, which is to die for. Now, do you love Tarina or what? If you do and are curious how to embrace some Tarina into your style, here is a little coordinate I came up with inspired by this pink haired goddess!First, I chose my favorite dress as mentioned before! Then go and get as much Tarina jewelry as possible. My favorite collection is her heart shaped items, which all go together in some odd fashion. Then go with all of her make up you can get in the brightest and pink girly shades. Then add unique little unique punk like touches, like these adorable strawberry colored boots from Doc Martens, and add whatever you can find in terms of shoe clips. I chose these pink heart clips, but pink bows will work too. My other little touches I chose were these black and white polka dot tights, and this pink and blonde mixture wig from my friend MintyMix.com. Finally, get your own Tarina Tarantino Tiara or any sort of crown you can to add some final sparkle! This is just my idea of perfecting the fabulous of Tarina, but you can do it whichever way you feel best!
So to make a final note, Tarina is an absolutely fabulous pink fairy of a lady. As you can tell she really is an inspiration to me, and when I met her (yes, that's me in not my most fashionable moment.) it was a grand moment to see someone I admired as a woman in person and tell her of the things she's done for me to make me feel beautiful as myself. So go forth, find your inner sparkle and see what you can do to add some Tarina to your wardrobe or style! I'm sure it'll put the biggest smile on your face when you do.

5 Frills Related Party Things - Move Over Alice!

Here at LVF, we really like to please the viewers, because without you this blog really wouldn't be possible. So because of that, this post is actually inspired by a recent viewer request! On my most recent post, I was asked about specific party themes in general. I've dealt with this sort of brain storm a lot, but not as much when it comes to specific frilly related themes. So, that is the focus of this post.

But it's important to note that most of the time I see one theme always pop up: Alice in Wonderland Tea Party. As I believe you all know, I'm not one to continue on cliches in frilly land, especially Alice! (You can read my article on Alice here) So this post will have no Alice related party themes at all, and apologies if you were in hopes of it. Trust me, if you're looking for such it's easy to find everywhere else.

Now, on with the ideas!

1) Marie Antoinette Theme
Cake: Vanilla (Dyed in Pink) Cake with Velvet Almond Buttercream Frosting (Dyed in Mint).

Granted, next to Alice, Marie Antoinette is probably just as cliche, but yet she's something that is just usual in the realm of Fashion in general, so you can't completely go wrong. But yet, what is the best part of this theme? Extreme decor. Pick colors like creams and pinks to use for ribbons and balloons, with hints of mint! Make all the tables covered in pictures from the Rococo period, along with tiny lace clothes for all the tables at your location! As activities, you can play a version of Pin The Tail on the Donkey, but instead Feed Marie The Cake. Make a full size picture Marie, blind fold a guest and see if they can land the cake on her mouth! You can also have a headdress making craft, where you design feather style hair clips (check out this DIY page for inspiration). You could also bake a selection of French treats, like these French Lace Cookies or these creations from Alice's Tea Cup! To go with your snacks, make a DIY Tea Station, full with all your favorite kinds of tea. Remember, Jasmine was one of Marie's favorites! Finally, as you enjoy your royal day to your hearts content, play a super cute card game! The winners of the game win a lovely selection of pearls!
2) Fairy Tale Adventure Theme
Cake: Red Velvet Cake

Rather then choosing just one Fairy Tale, I decided to go with all of them. Go with classics like Little Red Riding Hood (See why you need Red Velvet Cake in this, right?), Thumbelina and Cinderella, just to name a few! Decorate your house in fairy dolls and glitter. Cover the tables and walls with bottles of treasures, candies shaped like crowns and crushed flowers. As far as activities, you could build a fairy house together with all the guests! Make all the guest come dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters, and take pictures that can later be made into a fun scrap book. You could also plant a collection of lost items around the house, a treasure hunt is always the best! As a snack, make these adorable treats that are considered part of a Southern Fairy Tale! Finally, you can have a marathon of your favorite fairy tale films! Chose some of the classic Disney flare, or maybe some Fairy Tale Theater from the 80's (Yes, it's on Netflix!)
3) Peter Pan Neverland Theme
Cake: Banana Cake
One of my favorite childhood stories of all time, have an incredible time with this Pirate lolita special theme! Make sure everything is covered in maps and buried treasure treats! Make skull shaped cookies, such as these from Pillsbury. Make jar necklaces with glitter for all the guests to wear. My favorite activity is to decorate your own Pirate hat and or Eye Patch, like here! Get tons of feathers, bows and glitter to make it your own unique spin on frilly and pirate style. Make sure everyone wears some form of plaid, and when they enter the house have them walk the plank to get inside. Finally, when you decorate the cake, remember to put a little Peter Pan figure on top, such as this adorable one here! Don't forget the best part of this, you can watch your favorite version to end the party! My favorite is Hook, but the 2003 version is adorable as well as with of course the Disney classic.

4) Everything Cute Theme
Cake: Cupcakes instead!
Do you have a favorite Sanrio of San-X character? Well have a party inspired by them! My personal favorite is Rilakkuma and Sentimental Circus, along with Little Twin Stars and Tuxedo Sam! Go on ebay and get as many different kinds of invitations, tiny toys and more to give out for your party. Then, make everyone come to the party in a coordinate based on their favorite, or at least Hello Kitty (Isn't that everyone's favorite?) Then as for fun, you can make cupcakes based on the characters. Get tons of different icings, color dyes and sprinkles to have as much fun as possible. You can also have a DIY area for all different kinds of sweet drinks based on the characters too! You can make a Hello Kitty drink with Cherry flavored Pepsi, or make a Chococat Hot Chocolate drinks. To end the day, select to watch some episodes from the Hello Kitty TV Series from the 80's/90's. My favorite episode is The Sleeping Princess, which can be viewed here.

La Vida Birthday ~ The Way To Organize The Frilliest Birthday

It's odd to think that in a little over 3 weeks, I'll be 21. Over these many years of having birthday party after party, I've seen a lot of great ideas and tips come out from the imagination of both myself and my mother. Though not till in the last three years have they been influenced by lolita, they've all had something neat to embrace and share. But what about if you want to throw something on the frilly side, and not just the usual birthday flair? Here are some helpful tips!

1) Pick Something Fun and Frill!
If it be a sleepover, a trip to a special place, a dance party or all combined, pick something you want to do! Even if the thing you chose isn't exactly lolita related, make it relate in your own special way. If it's going to be a sleepover, picked lolita related movies or create lolita versions of games. If it's going to be a trip going celebration, pick a frill friendly place! I love going to places like Soho (Tarina Tarantino and Betsey Johnson, anyone?) and getting something delicious to eat with friends (Cafe Angelique is adorable). If you decide on a dance party, have fun creating a fantasy playlist of the coolest and cutest tracks! One of my favorite bands to dance to is Alphabeat, who have a great mix of cute lyrics and delicious 80's inspired beats!

2) Buy yourself a new birthday/party dress or come up with a cute new coordinate! Every birthday, if I can, I buy myself a new dress to celebrate the occasion! I always love to pick something ridiculously pink and fluffy to the core, to fits my style and price range (I never spend more then $150 if I can!) For those of you who don't have the budget for a new dress, come up with an amazing coordinate out of your favorite colors and items if your wardrobe! I'm a sucker for themes ~ pick something in lolita that you love. For me I adore Carousels or old toys, which could be my theme this year. Celebrate yourself in a color, theme and style that represents you on your special day! If you want to get something new for your outfit, but don't want to get a new dress, get a new jewelry piece! My favorite place to buy pricey yet beautiful quick additions is Top Shop. They may not be the cheapest, but they are amazing accessories that are just as good as brand pieces, like this Pocket Watch Necklace!

3) Plan even more!
After the essential ideas and plans are mapped out, it's best to dig into the details. Make a list of times for people to arrive, food to prepare, and music to play! What movies should you watch? Wait...

You might also wanna try some frill related games! Create a Lolita based trivia game or play games like Clue - whoever wins gets prizes! Don't go crazy, but you could make something like a batch of cookies or some handmade jewelry. Either way you can be extremely creative and fun with it.

4) Decorate your cake with something about yourself
No matter what, store bought or homemade - make sure your cake is personal. Some years, I've let the cake step aside and I end up disappointed, as I find the cake or delicious baked good the best part of the celebration. The cake should speak volumes of what you love and like, so everyone can share in what makes you amazing - just like the cake! I also go to little cheap toy stores and by in-expensive figures of my favorite characters or use ones I still have from when I was a kid. Check out etsy for tons of fun things to put on your cake. You can even print out pictures of Misako Aoki or Amo, laminate them and put them on sticks to put on the cake for a nice touch. This year I'm going with an Icebox Cake (picture above)! It's made of chocolate circle cookies stack on top of one another with lots of white frosting!

2011 has finally arrived and so far, it's pretty glorious! As you can see on LVF, things have been updated and some new things are up on the site. As stated before, this month I'm turning 21, which means I'm going to be officially an adult. So, in celebration of the last few weeks of my youth, I'm going to be posting about some of my favorite things. Maybe it's a tribute to Oprah or just a tribute to myself, but I thought this would be lots and lots of fun to see.

What about Favorite Coordinate of the Month? This time, one of my favorites curly_b was selected. She has a fantastic sense of her own unique and classy style, that mixes both sweet and pirate and a bit of punk together in a beautiful way. Check out her blog here!

Next up, what is the Video of the Month? Well, if anyone knows me by on live-journal and sees my icon, you know there's one singer I adore oddly enough: Michael Jackson. So in tribute to my favorite things, I posted part the music video for his song Ghosts. In the video, Michael is a magical ghost from what seems to be the Victorian era. But when he is hunted down by a mob of angry villagers, Michael begs to ask the question... "Is this Scary!?" It's very campy but fun, I recommend checking it out. Fun fact: The guy who is leading the Mob is actually played by Michael as well, he's just covered in lots of make up and an extremely convincing fat suit. Tricked ya, ha?

Getting To Know You: LVF's Favorite Movies

Once in a while on LVF, we like to take a moment to appreciate some of the finer yet not frilly things that could otherwise be appreciated. Sometimes I get asked "Hey, what are your favorite movies then, ha Miss Frills?" Well guess what, that question shall now be answered! Remember, none of these movies are really frilly related (yet all pictures have a bow on them, for fun!), but they are excellent regardless. Now, on with the movies!

The Fifth Element (1997)
First we shall start off with a recent favorite of mine. I learned about this little charm of a sci-fi film from one of my best friends, who would always try to get me into it. I never really got how cool this movie was for the longest time, as only have been shown some action sequences and Chris Tucker (who to me is a turn off in most movies), I just never got it. But one day, I just happened to catch the entire film on TV - and I was hooked for life. Featuring my favorite action man Bruce Willis, one of the hottest women to ever grace the screen Mila Jovovich and costumes by fashion design Jean Paul Gaultier, it's the closest one will get to an art house Sci-Fi film. My favorite scene in the film is when Willis is watching the infamous Opera Diva perform, while Mila's character faces off the enemy in a fantastic edited action sequence. Highly recommend this one.

Hook (1991)
Said to be one the few films that Spielberg hates being associated with, it's actually my favorite film of his that he ever made. As a huge Peter Pan fan, I think this is one of the few to have gotten the look of Neverland perfectly. This is also the film in which I became highly interested in both Robin Williams and Peter Pan for the first time. Granted, many happen to think this movie is cheesy or a bit dated, but I still think it holds up perfectly. It has one of the best scores to ever be recorded, and transforms actors who I never expected to do action films at all (Props to both Williams and Hoffman as Hook for this!) I think the best part of this movie is the neat little details and odd cameos that you have to pay attention to to understand, like Glen Close as the pirate who is dropped off the ship when Peter arrives in Neverland or all the objects inside Wendy's house and how they relate to the story. When a filmmaker can add details such as this, it's a true sight to see.

Sunset Boulevard (1950)
I'm always truly impressed by the work of Billy Wilder. His films never have a specific story style really, and you can never really spot a Wilder film - they're all unique. But the most different and special of all his films is always one of my favorites. This film tells the story of Norma, a fading silent movie actress and Joe, a down and out screenwriter. The two meet in a string of odd events, eventually leading to Joe becoming the obsession of Norma's affections. From what starts as the usual 40's/50's style film becomes a bizarre portrait of Hollywood's bad side that was obviously way ahead of its time and can be in competition with films of Darren Aronofsky. Similar to Hook, this film pays a fitting yet creepy tribute to the silent film era, with many of the actors in the film having been from that actual time and being involved in similar events to the characters themselves. Sometimes campy, but extremely moving, Sunset Boulevard is a masterpiece.

The Hunchback of Norte Dame (1996)
I'm a huge fan of Disney, it's probably my favorite thing in the whole world - next to a few other fandoms. It's hard for me to pin-point all my absolute favorite things when it comes to Disney as a whole, but the one thing I'm sure is my favorite is this movie. It's even hard to call it a "Disney movie" because it almost has no connection to the usual cores of such a style. Sure, it's a softer approach to Hugo's story, yet for a film from the House of Mouse, it's very complex. Showcasing my favorite villain and villain song of all time, Frollo is one of those odd instances where a man as simple as a minister can easily become the creepiest thing I've seen on film. Maybe it's because he doesn't have magical powers or anything fantasy about him, that his realistic nature makes him actually possible in real life, which is what makes me terrifying. This also showcases my favorite piece of instrumental music ever (click here to see/listen). Go and be amazed.

And finally.....
Back to the Future Trilogy (1985)
Yes indeed, this is my favorite movie in the entire world. I'll be honest that I wasn't into this film much as a kid, but I really got into it during Middle school. Maybe it's because of my outcast or individual feeling that I had because of where I live, or because I wish I could indeed be as cool as Marty, but Back to the Future clicked for me in a way no other film could try. Now to address the sequels, these films are so good that I don't think you should ever address them as separate movies as all these films need to be watched together in their complete trilogy order and enjoyed as one film. Hence why I didn't just pick the first movie or any of the others on the list - the whole trilogy needs to be watched without pause. But, if you don't have about 6 hours to kill, go see the first film at least! You'll be wishing you had more time for the others (puns).

LVF Update: Winner of LVF 1st Anniversary Contest and An LVF Christmas

How was everyone's Holiday? I hope it was fabulous! Mine was all kinds of fun to the core, I got an early birthday present (since my Birthday is on January, the 23rd) and some amazing Lolita and non-Loli related things!

But first, let's get something fantastic out of the way! I know this is posted a bit later then I thought it would be, but here is indeed the winner of LVF's 1st Anniversary Contest....
And the winner is.... focusing the lens with her choice of frilliest movie Gigi! Here is her entry:

"My favorite frilly movie is actually probably Gigi. I love the music and the story, and I really like Gigi's character. She's precocious and cheerful, and her development into a woman is far from graceful and rather uncomfortable, but it has a happy ending, which I think a lot of lolitas can really relate to."

So, curious what I got for Christmas? I can't discuss everything but here are a few of my favorites!

I got some really fun clothes that will all work in my frilly wardrobe, including a huge selection of mega cute cardigans. My favorite (shown) is this sparkly bow piece from Charlotte Russe. If you like, the black version is on sale now for $10 on the website (I'm tempted to get it myself!) I also got one of my first Innocent World pieces, a very professionally made and great quality tote bag from their Night Teddy collection in Black. I also got a Putumayo (my new favorite brand) skirt I wanted. Check out the detail - it has glitter and yummy goodies!
Next up, I was lucky enough to receive a bunch of movies I wanted!

I got Little Women, Newsies, Cronos, Waking Sleeping Beauty and Back to the Future on DVD/BluRay for my ever growing movie collection!
and last but not least....

I got a ton of Tarina Tarantino Jewelry! You all know how much I love her stuff and how it perfectly fits lolita fashion. I can tell you I've already come up with coordinates for all of these!

I'm so lucky to have a family who is so amazing and giving on Christmas, I wasn't expecting any of these things so it was pretty incredible.
But I really want to know, what did you all get for Christmas or whatever Holiday you celebrate? Show pictures and let me know!

Also, a little update: Next months theme will actually be very personal ~I'll be turning 21 and will be talking about all my favorite movies and things all month long! I'm excited to share with all of you some of my most favorite things and I hope I can hear about yours too!

Print and a Movie: The Nutcracker (1995)

Angelic Pretty sometimes really surprises me and so does Macaulay Culkin! What do those two surprises combined to give us? Well finally, a new Print and a Movie post! Though I have all ready expressed my love for a version of The Nutcracker in the post prior, I think it's important to note how much I love the original ballet as well. Maybe it's because I have a thing for tutus or because I was almost a ballerina myself, but Ballet is something I really appreciate! But what I appreciate even more is a good representation of ballet on film.

Though there have been many before this or after (Oh Black Swan, how you look so good!), I find this 90's simply filmed ballet version of the classic Nutcracker to be fantastic! Why? Because it's just ballet on film. Nothing too special, it has some very nice sequences of editing and the talent on screen is lovely to see. But again, the surprise? Macaulay Culkin (90's kid style) is dancing ballet! Not many kid actors would have the guts to do such a thing, let alone the kid that known for screaming so adorable in giant close ups on camera. So even if he's not the best dancer in the world, for what it is I give him big props.

What about Angelic Pretty though? Well I mean come on, did you expect them to come out with the print Holy Night Story? I didn't! Usually this is something with a flair similar to Baby or Innocent World, yet has it's own Angelic Pretty style in a more sophisticated way. I especially love the details of The Mouse King and the very pretty Rocking Horse! They even went with doing two styles of the jsk, one that resembles the Nutcracker and one that is more their classic jsk style (which I chose to show, in the red colorway!)

So, go and check out this simple and cute version of The Nutcracker ballet along with this surprise of a print from Angelic Pretty. You'll be able to dance the Sugar Plum Fairy dance with even more Christmas cheer!

Holiday Special Movie Review/Dress Up Time: The Nutcracker Prince

Christmas is inching more and more closer, and with that its always good to have some movies to get you in the spirit. But what about the frilly spirit? Here at LVF, we want to give you the best of the best for you to enjoy my favorite holiday, and maybe it's yours too!

One of those movies that I'm sure you'd want to add to your list is The Nutcracker Prince (1990), a small little animated film in the style of then inspirational Disney The Little Mermaid. The style, though not made my Disney, definitely has the feel and look to it that it could have been made by them. The animation isn't exactly perfect, but it's cute and take some of its own creative freedoms that have such made it one of my favorite Christmas movies to watch, even when it isn't Christmas!
In case you don't know anything about the general Nutcracker story, here's the lowdown: Clara is the middle child of a wealthy family, who has only wish for this Christmas - to get a new doll. But what does her favorite (not related) Uncle give her? A Nutcracker. But he isn't just any normal Nutcracker, he once was a normal boy who was proclaimed a prince before being transformed into a doll. Clara is now casted into a magical journey to help the Nutcracker defeat his enemy The Rat King, and release him from his curse!

The music is of course based on that from the iconic ballet of the same name, but has some musical numbers inspired by the music of the ballet itself. The best parts of this movie are any of the moments with Clara and The Nutcracker themselves. They have an adorable and innocent relationship that, though not very deep, is just what is needed for a cute and romantic film that children won't want to widdle and leave the living room for.

This movie in general is simplicity at it's best, which is both it's strong point and weak point. No, it definitely isn't Disney. But it definitely fits in with other holiday classics and non-Disney movies like the later Don Bluth's and some of the Rankin & Bass productions. I highly recommend it as one of the top frilly Christmas movies to check out and enjoy this Holiday season. But what about dressing up as Clara?

For this outfit, blue and white are the main colors (but you could use Mint instead of blue as well). Clara is only but a girl of 13 or 14, so like the film, go simple with the items used. I chose the Dessert OP from Baby as the OP/Jsk in this outfit! Next, I went straight for a pair of Baby tights (inspired by their recent Ballerina print!) in a white x pink color palette. I also chose a pair of simple white shoes, also from Baby, but any flats in white with bows will do.

The extra special things to remember are the hair, necklace and bag! Clara always has her hair in a pony tail with bow attached. Go with a blue or cream for this! I chose a pair of Baby bows as well. The necklace is of a tiny monkey dressed as the Nutcracker, designed by Betsey Johnson. Finally, I picked The Swan Lake print bag from Metamorphose as the choice to go with this coordinate, since Clara and her Nutcracker, fly on Swans with golden necklaces!

So, hopefully this gets you in a fun Christmas mood! LVF recommends this tiny little cute thing of a movie for your holiday viewings. Look out for more posts for inspiration, and don't forget to sign up for the 1st Anniversary Contest!

Dress Up Time #8: Princess of Winterland from The Polar Bear King

Though she isn't given much of a name, The Princess in The Polar Bear King is the definition of winter. Her hair is a soft European blonde, covered in small bits of snowflakes, and her face is that of a red blush that only can be produced in the most frigged of temperatures. She has a very familiar face and atmosphere of most princesses, but only the most kind. This is why she is the subject of today's Dress Up Time!

In case you haven't noticed, The Polar Bear King is one of the movies given as a prize in our 1st Anniversary Contest, so you might want to check this one out!

It tells the story of the Princess, who is loved by a Polar Bear who claims he is a king. In her fantasy life, she dreams of going to such a place that The Polar Bear describes, and he takes her to his kingdom called Summerland. There we see that he is indeed a king who was once human, but The Princess has many tasks to go through before they are given a happily ever after.

But what should you do if you want to be given the chance to befriend and love a Polar Bear King and go on a glorious adventure to Summerland? Here is how!

First, I'd go with a very simple cream or white jumperskirt. Nothing too royal or over the top, especially since this Princess cares more about her Kingdom then what her Kingdom thinks of her style! You also need to pick a thick and comfortable blouse, and jacket to go with it! The blouse is from Baby and the jacket is from Yesstyle.com!

Don't forget the little things, like a pair of brown boots to walk in the snow with. Also don't forget to add items like polar bear and snowflake themed accessories, I chose a necklace and hairpiece this time! You also might want to go for grey faux fur gloves or scarf items too.

Now, go forth and have fun in your own Winterland!

LVF 1st Anniversary Contest!

As some of you already know, LVF is having a contest to celebrate it's first birthday! In celebration we will be having another fabulous contest that will be ending on December 24th!

The contest? Submit a one sentence answer of what you believe to be your favorite frilliest movie and why. For each season I have a new favorite, so right now it's the Polar Bear King - which will be a subject in an up coming Dress Up Time entry!

Some people have already entered the contest, you can either comment on this post or the one linked here. You have till December 24th (Christmas Eve) to enter! But what about prizes? You'll be getting The Polar Bear King and The Muppet Christmas Carol on DVD along with a yummy Christmas themed movie snack. There is also one other prize, but that's actually a surprise! Movie Review #14: LoliGirls

It's refreshing to once in a while review something that's exactly about the subculture this blog is speaking to and the reasons why we love it. No, I am not talking about anything from Japan, but instead America. Welcome to the world of Victoria, Aly and Julia, or as the film is titled, the Loligirls. This independent short film is exactly what all Lolita's should see as an introductory piece.

Though the styles have morphed and changed slightly from what these famous members wear now, it's refreshing to a positive look at the subculture as apposed to one filled to the brink with drama and negative reactions. This tiny little film follows that of famous bloggers Victoria of Lolita Charm, Aly of Miss Lumpy, and Julia, designer of Good Night Miss Princess (A frilly sleepwear brand). As the documentary proclaims, the girls dress for themselves and not anyone else! The documentary follows the girls on their everyday adventures and to the final production of their fashion show for anime convention ConnetiCon.

This film is absolutely adorable! Filled with so many lovely shots and moments of pure joy, as a feel lolita fashion fan, I completely was enveloped in the lives of these girls. Seeing their unique takes on the fashion and how they have absolutely no reservations of doubting themselves is again, as already mentioned: refreshing.

Though I did find that to be unfortunately at times, the films flaw. There unfortunately negative aspects to this fashion and to make a well rounded documentary, I feel the need for both sides of the topic are needed to get a truly follow view of what is being discussed. But at the same time, this is only a very small and minor aspect to a film that really makes you have a great feel for the fashion and even if you aren't a huge fan of frills and poof as I might be or the girls are, you want to be friends or become a Loligirl yourself.

Regardless of my slight difference in viewpoints, this film is really fantastic and frilly to an extent that no other documentary or feature film has really captured (Yes, even Kamikaze Girls!). I'm really proud to say that this is a staple in Lolita's journey into the film genre. This makes me incredibly excited to see the new full-length documentary by the filmmakers of Kato Films!

International Lolita Day 2010: Winter Edition

My favorite Holiday has come back this year in ILD, and even better it's the winter edition! I can honestly say I really love wearing Lolita during the winter time more then the summer. Why? Because of the acceptance of layers and my favorite colors of red, pink, and soft whites (and sometimes blacks). As a Winter baby myself, this is my favorite time of the year and it just happens to make ILD even better then usual.

So of course the question is, what are you doing to celebrate? Me myself, I will be going to the NYC Opera Meet Up and seeing La Boheme with my favorite girls and then going to the Russian Tea Room for a delicious after opera meal. This will be my first Opera and I am so excited, especially since it'll be at the world famous MET. Oh, New York is just the best when it comes to theater.

Fun Fact: You see the dress Misako is wearing in that picture? I'll be wearing that same exact outfit on Lolita Day! Another fun thing, I'll be celebrating the day twice with another group of friends too! I'm just too excited, I couldn't just celebrate it once.

LVF Update: Coordinate Of The Month and New Contest!

So December is coming fast! The lovely snows, Christmas carols, and warm winter fires will be starting. But what about LVF? Want to make this blog space a little prettier? The theme for this month should be something related to the holidays and winter - so have as much fun and be as elegant as possible!

Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert Screening

It's sad to think we live in a world where people don't know about the beginnings of popular music - also known as musicals. I know some people tend to think they are cheesy or over the top - but then when you look deep into your favorite genre's music, they all are connected by one singular thing, musicals. Musicals started everything when it comes to the music everyone else chooses to listen to. We wouldn't be anywhere today without the Broadway musical, especially when it comes to the mature subject matter that music can bring us. This is why I bring to your attention a musical only a wee bit older then myself, that has remained a favorite of mine and I hope could become or is already something you whistle or sing on occasion.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a special 1 day only screening of Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert, recorded back in October at the O2 Arena. This show and location is both infamous in size and beauty - which is why this was something I couldn't miss. Les Mis has been a favorite mine since I was little, being raised on Cameron Macintosh and Andrew Llyodd Webber shows - this was one of the staples even in it's recent creation in the 90's.

Ever since I can never seem to escape the story or the entire world of Victor Hugo's masterpiece. First off, if you don't know the story of Les Miserables, I recommend reading the official website, in it's most epic of layouts and designs.

The story can easily be described as that of the essential human struggle of good and evil in all of us. No character is really pure, they all have a duel side to them that you can argue to be one to defend or go against. But overall I can never seen to properly express how perfect this musical is - but let me dive into the details of this specific performance.

This features what I believe to be on the coolest casts that the show has had. Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean gives some real Opera cred to the role, along with key members Matt Lucas (Little Britain) and Nick Jonas (If I have to tell you who he is, I think that's a big problem.) Not all of these members exactly carry the talent to represent this show perfectly (cough - Jonas), but the majority of them filled their roles to perfection - especially Boe and Lucas, new comers to the production. The highlight performances for me this time around were Matt Lucas's Master of the House, Anytime Boe got to sing (also basically his entire performance), On my Own, and also the entire performance of a new love of mine Ramin Kamiloo. You might know of Ramin from his new role of Eric, The Phantom in Love Never Dies (Which he also played the original Phantom.)

But what was the one flaw of this production? You guessed it, Jonas. I apologize for those who are Jonas fans reading this - but as a true fan of this musical, hearing the role of Marius played by a little boy instead of a man was truly disappointing. Granted, he's probably the only one to play Marius who was actually the characters age, but still when one new singer is over taken by the original singer who is almost 50 - we have a problem.

Overall? I was so pleased with this production. It meant a lot to me, especially when my mom and me were convinced we'd somehow see this exact production live 15 years ago. Sadly, we didn't get to see it actually live - but this was just as good and close as we could. Frilly Musical? Go for it period/historical story telling lovers! Les Miserables The 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 is not something you should miss! You can pre-order your copy on DVD and Blu-Ray here. (US version should be available soon as well!)

Frilly News: Red Riding Hood Pictures

In 2010, we got a frilly horror film in The Wolfman - and in 2011, we will get an even more girl powered frilly horror film in Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood. This is expected to be one of those films that will be instantly become a cult hit and all over obsession with those into subculture fashion and music. Though many reflect on Hardwicke's work based on Twilight, I truly love her other films and feel she doesn't get any respect as a real filmmaker (Thirteen being my favorite.) I'm also a huge Amanda Seyfried fan, who plays a new dangerous version of the title character. Did I mention Gary Oldman is in this too? Get ready. (Link for my info)

Dress Up Time: Polly from The Scarecrow

Now granted, This movie is ridiculously hard to find and it's probably more geared towards Halloween - yet I think Thanksgiving works for it too! So here is a little Dress Up Time treat - I picked for this week Polly from The Scarecrow. A cute cheesy little animated gem by Richard Rich, creator of the Swan Princess.

This movie tells the story of The Scarecrow, who by the magic of a fairy godmother, comes to life in human form to help his love - Polly. An orphan girl who is attempting to be enchanted by the evil rich Grisham. Scarecrow (Or Feather Top, as he is later called) must save Polly and the other orphan children, but without anyone knowing his true identity. It's cute - nothing extremely special but I do think it's one of those fun movies you can watch to get that youthful feeling about the holiday's and fall in you.

In terms of an outfit, I decided to go with my own interpretation of Polly, rather then a literal outfit from her color scheme. Polly seems to be a dark red head, so I chose this neat brown outfit to compliment her almost brunette tones. First I chose a recently added Baby jumperskirt, along with a long Forever 21 sweater that seems really comfortable! Polly tends to only have a few articles of clothing, so you need to keep yourself warm.

Then I chose a cute slightly off color tartan scarf. It compliments the strips on the dress and makes it look a bit mix/matchy, as Polly looks usually. I picked a nice comfy pair of boots, along with a big brown bag to help Polly carry her shoes for the other Orphan kids! The final touches are that of a feather necklace, paying tribute to Feather Top (since Feather's are a key object in the story) and a cute little black (or brown works) bow to place in her hair.

I adore this outfit, and even with all it's cheese, I love the movie too. Fun fact: Corey Feldman plays Max, the rat companion of The Scarecrow. It always makes me laugh when I see this movie, just on that alone. If you'd like to see The Scarecrow, it's been kindly uploaded to youtube here. So go on an adventure with your own Scarecrow!

LVF Updates: New Features on LVF!

It is now officially the fall, as November has just begun! LVF is going to be a bit spars for a little bit, as mentioned that I'll be filming my thesis in a week. But while you wait for more fun posts, I've added some cool features on the sides of the blog.

You'll notice on the right is a new section called Frilly Video of the Month! Here you can check out a super fun and lolita (or just frilly-loving) video to help you get excited for your day or month! This month's video is Misako Aoki, when she visited Hyper Japan in London. I love the way she talks with the audience and her lovely atmosphere!

Also posted on the right is My Favorite Coordinate of the Month! Results of "My Personal Dream Outfit" Contest

After almost 100 entries and so many fantastic outfits, I have come to a very hard and demanding decision.... the top 3 of La Vida Frill's "My Personal Dream Outfit Contest". Before we get started, I wanted to share with you all my favorite entries (since there was so many I wanted to win!) Here on my flickr account (click link).

And now, drum roll please......

In 3rd Place, we have Madison with her Pride and Prejudice inspired outfit:

Description: "This outfit really shows off the side of me that loves a classic, elegant look. I adore autumnal colors, especially dark reds, and I have always dreamed of owning a dress in such a shade. I included cream-colored socks and a cute cutsew to add a bit of sweetness to this otherwise mature look. There is also a feather hair fascinator present for a bit of vintage flair. However, my favorite piece in this ensemble has to be the ring shaped like a longhorn skull. It adds a slightly macabre element and subtly shows off the darker side of my personality. And of course, I just had to put in Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth (I'm a huge P & P fan)! This would be my ultimate dream outfit (and looking at those prices it will have to remain as such...)"

LVF Thoughts: This coordinate is classy in so many ways! With all the interesting elements of subdue colors, longhorn skull ring and, not to mention the fantastic movie inspiration - this outfit really has a lot going for it. Madison has her own unique take on style that is her own vision and truly shows! She takes risks in ways that turn out fierce and elegant.

One of my favorite pairings is light blue with dark colors like black or navy; with autumn setting in, I've really been feeling brown lately because it reminds me of whipped hot chocolate and thick vegetable stew and all the other delicacies of autumn. The main reason this outfit embodies my personal style is because it's vintage-y classic lolita enhanced by quirky, eclectic accessories that still remain elegant. I've paired my favorite bonnet, a custom piece by Ophanim Gothique, with a beautiful JSK by Mary Magdalen and a flowy sheer blouse by Victorian Maiden for that classic, old-fashioned look. Because it's getting chilly here, I'd probably feel like jumping off a bridge if I had to cram my feet into uncomfortable, breezy heels; these boots are almost exactly like my personal cool-weather staple, a pair faux-fur-lined vintage leather boots from a thrift store on the Lower East Side, paired with a lovely pair of cream lace tights. These shoes are so comfortable I wear them as slippers on fall evenings! Though I'm usually a big proponent of bags you can live out of, these days I've been packing up a small pochette to tak to class with my bookbag, so I'm confident that maybe I'll be able to use a teeny-weeny clutch like this adorable piece by YSL. Speaking of practical, some of my classes absolutely forbid the use of electronics, so I've invested in a cute rhinestone watch - if only it were this beauty! I'm channeling my newfound love of mori-girl (a love for which I was in serious denial for a time but just can't escape anymore!) with a fur collar and a crazy stag-head ring, and of course, keeping it classy by piling on the pearls until they're practically dripping down my fingers."

LVF Thoughts: I'm such a sucker for blue, let's just face it - and with that in mind, Missy Lumpy has got me craving some more pastel ocean colors in my wardrobe. To the deer ring and my personal favorite touch, the letter shaped purse, this outfit has a great style and fun that I always crave for. You can tell this outfit has a lot of dreams and whimsy put into it!

Description: "I simply adore the Milky Berry JSK in mint. I love the combination of mint and red and decided to use those colours in the accessories. I chose to keep the strawberries in, because they’re one of my favorite fruits. I wanted an umbrella and a bag and was lucky enough to find two adorable combinations of red and white.I adore white blouses with short sleeves, especially a couple from Baby, so I added that too. This was the last coord I made. I got a bit lazy, so I used full pictures instead of cutting them."

LVF Thoughts: When looking through all the entries this morning, I couldn't help but dive into the world of Lolita Wonderland. Now granted, looking simply at the coordinate and some of the basics, maybe this isn't what I would have originally chosen. But, something sparked my interest and that was the spirit behind the dreams and fantasy coming from this outfit. Wonderland seems to truly love and respect this fashion and it's magical, which is what I looked for in the entries overall! That sparkle and wonder when it comes to Lolita really showed in this, and I just adore it. She has the magic and twinkle many of you and I myself, had when starting in Lolita and this is something I was amazed by. To see more of Lolita Wonderland, go here.

Frilly Goals For November

I thought it might be fun to do something a bit more on the frilly side then the film side for a bit each month with some of my Frilly Goals! Maybe reading these will inspire you to do something similar things with yourself when in the poof and splendor!

My most important goal for November right now is finishing my Thesis film. It is my most important project I've ever worked on and means more to me then most people will ever know. It's called (working title) "La Fille de l'avenir" (The Daughter of the Future) and is the story of a 18th Century girl, about to be married and worried about the constrictions of marriage, thinking she'll lose her independent female self. She is given a magical key, that transports her to 2010 - But what she sees isn't exactly all she had dreamed of for the future. If that doesn't get you excited, Kelsey of I Do Declare will be the costume designer and the title song will be done by Candy Hearts! It's a collection of all the things that make me happy and I'm so proud to be making my dream film.
I'll be holding my first meet up since April, when I did it for Alice in Wonderland's movie fun! This time I'm running another meet up for a Disney movie - Tangled, the fun re-telling of Rapunzel. I'm dying to dress up in a Disney inspired coordinate again - this time I'm deciding between Bambi or Chip'n'Dale. Which do you think I should do? Gimmie ideas!
I'm really wanting to get more fall and winter colors into my wardrobe, including more browns and plaids! I've already accomplish more red plaid, but I'd love even more colors to chose from. I'm even debating on getting that Baby lucky pack dress with the ties on the side, just to feed this craving!
Another goal is to make the best present for the Lolita Day Christmas Exchange at the Opera meet up! I've already collected a few items, but I still need to find something really special.
Speaking of which, I really need to get my coordinate for that day together as well. My main piece, Lovely Sweet Room in Red arrived already. Now I must get a long sleeve white blouse, a cute pair of brown boots and a new red bag - possibly. I also want a new faux fur stole, along with tiny Christmas trinket hair pieces for my hair. Did I mention I really want to crimp my hair for this outfit?
I'm also wanting to get everything Deers and Teddy Bears this year. I know they have been and are in season right now and I've fallen for their charm. Bring me the prettiest fawns and little squishy Bears oh fashion world! I shall get everything I see!

Dress Up Time Special: The Question - Who Will You Be For Halloween?

This year when it came to Halloween, I decided to be economical and not spend any money on anything new! By just making an outfit out of my own closest, so with the idea I chose to dress as one of my favorite characters of all time: Dorothy Gale!

Though this outfit isn't perfect, I think I easily got the general elements of the outfit correct and with that made a pretty cute version of the Kansas darling!

First thing I picked was the best of my blue jumperskirts to use. Though it isn't gingham, I chose my Love to be a Princess JSK from Angelic Pretty. It's probably my favorite dress in my closet and since I took off the extreme detachable bows, it works for a more cute and princess looking Dorothy.

I decided this would be more an interpretation of when Dorothy gets made up in the Emerald City, hence why it'll look so glamorous! This is also why I chose to use my red Tarina Dorothy necklace, and my cute and lovely Red Tea Party replicas for her ruby slippers! I'm not using any special Straw basket, but this one works.

My final touch I chose was my collection of Wizard of Oz dolls, that I'll put into the basket instead of Toto. I've had these since I was little and really want to put them to good use. My favorite is the Scarecrow, so he will be featured the most.

Yeah, it isn't exactly Dorothy as intended, but it's my version and I love it. But now I wanna know, what are you wearing on the costumed holiday? Lolita? Nothing related to frills? Tell me!

Dress Up Time Special Edition: Alice - THE RE:DUX

For all of those in Lolita Fashion, I think it's easy for us all to say that we have related to one specific character from literature when it comes to our fashion as a whole. Maybe it might be because you loved the original source material, the Disney movie, all the cool stuff that Japan makes because of their obsession, or because she is the somewhat iconic poster child for Lolita fashion. But it's pretty easy to assume that we've all felt something when it comes to this little girl from England.

Myself, I definitely have been an Alice fan for years. Maybe it's the mixture of elegance and ridiculousness, or the relations of life and it's "Rabbit Hole" qualities, but Alice is definitely something that I've taken interest in and has grown more as I've dug into my Lolita roots.

But at the same time, I can't help but feel that is almost an overrated tone that Alice is getting. It might because I'm slowly becoming an old timer when it comes to this Fashion (been into it since 2004, just for clarification) But Alice truly is something that never changes, which I find it both the downfall and the fortunate quality to her fame.

This mostly comes from my reaction to peoples in take and understanding of how to represent Alice. Yes, of course, there is always the combination of blue and white and a hint of black. Sure blonde hair and maybe some sort of black bow is nice. But does it always have to be the same? Can't we break from this mold?

I think the best example I have of this is Alice and the Pirates, which takes Alice from just the girl we knew of the novels to that of a girl lost on a magical pirate-ship. But this is what I dream of the understanding and appreciation of Alice . She doesn't have the be one dimensional in her fashion recreations.

So if you're going to be Alice for Halloween this year, might I suggested this as a guide to maybe trying a new way of Alice. For go the slutty costume store version, or borrowing a white apron from your mother's closet. Here's my dream Alice outfit, to help inspire you in your Wonderland journey!

As you can see, all the appropriate elements are represented for the character. The knight cards, the blue x white x black, the white rabbit, even the Queen of Heart is included. But was changed?

First, I chose just a regular Jumperskirt and blouse then the added apron. Apron's I find to be one of the most costume like elements of Lolita and doesn't work, or need to be essential, in the world of Alice. Instead I chose for a new take, a super cute high-necked blouse with a bow attachment.

Also, for-go the Mary Janes and pick a cute pair of low heeled boots or heeled shoes with bows in a black tone. Also pick a fun Alice concept appropriate pair or tights or socks. Make sure they aren't too low - so they'll make your outfit tasteful. Then to add a final touch, go with a cute black bow or blue bow. Either works, and like the one shown, chose one with a hint of sparkle or rhinestones.

So at the end of the day, make Alice your own! Don't feel to fall under her usual pressures and cliches. Alice was always a character who wanted to follow her own unusual path and you can do. That way you won't fall prey to the Jabborwocky and you'll be the pretty heroine of the Lolita world.

Quick News Flash: Meet Twenty Four Lies Per Second

As you may remember a while back, I had gotten the job as a co-writer for another film centered blog called Twenty Four Lies Per Second. Well, it seems the owner is off and heading on a fantastic journey of becoming a hardcore filmmaker, and in return has given me the "keys" (so to speak) for the blog.

Though it might not all be to your frilly liking, I hope you'll check it out and give it some love. I'm a big believer in the ability to learn about movies that might not be the big major releases you know about, but the little guys. This blog is all about that. Showcasing the best in film, whether they be films you know or ones you will soon know. The best is, all the film's that are spoken of are all a bit on the darker side of story telling. A little Del Toro or Tarantino fan? Well you might enjoy this place. Like a little Hitchcock in your film diet? Come on over!

LVF Exclusive: Interview w/ Director of "The Secret of Kells" Tom Moore and Art Director Ross Stewart

So once in a blue moon, La Vida Frills gets really lucky to be granted special things. One of these was an interview with the Director of the Academy Award nominated film "The Secret of Kells". The interview was conducted at this years New York Comic Con and was my first interview ever! I was really pleased on how it turned out and I hope you enjoy reading some of the highlights from the conversation. I'd like to mention that I was also lucky enough to interview the Art Director Ross Stewart at the same time. For my first interview it was extremely relaxing and fun. The guys were the sweetest and most genuine people I've ever had the chance of meeting.

In case you have no knowledge of the film, here's a quick synopsis:

In medieval Ireland, a young boy named Brendan ordinary life is turned into extraordinary when a master Illuminator brings a mysterious book with him. Brendan is given the task of restoring the book to it's full glory, and such must go on a journey through the misty Celtic forests of Ireland. Helping him on his quest is a fay named Aisiling, who has the ability to transform into a wolf. Together they beat the odds and go on a mission of wonder and delight.

Now you know the story... so, on with the fun!

LVF: So first, can you tell me what it feels like to have made an Oscar nominated film?

TM: Well, we didn't expect it to be nominated, you know. So that was pretty exciting! It really was cool!

RS: It was nothing that we ever imagined when we were making the film. It was the most pleasant surprise that you could ever get.

LVF: What do you think are the ingredients to making an Oscar nominated film?

TM: I don't know, if I did I'd set it in a bag that'd say "Here's the ingredients to making an Oscar nominated film."

RS: I reckon the reason why we got nominated I'd say, because it was something a little bit different. Something that [the academy] had never seen before and they thought it had some heart in the film.

LVF: Do you feel the pressure on your next project to have it be nominated for an Oscar or even win? Or do you feel you can just make a new film with a relaxed notion regardless?

TM: Well, it's better not to think about awards or beating anyone out when you're working on a new project. So, I'm hoping to make the best film that I can and hope that people that liked the first one will like the second one even more! Because I think you'll be a better filmmaker if you think that way, I at least say so.

RS: Well the next one I say... has to win the Oscar!

LVF: What are the next projects that you are involved in?

TM: I'm developing a feature film called Song of the Sea. (To check out information on the film, which looks so cute I can't wait, click here)It's based on the legend of Selkies, the legend of women that can turn into Seals. It's kind of the best of Irish and Scottish legends. So it's about the last one and she's a little girl in the city and she has to find her way back to the sea.

LVF: Do you feel that your film has a different sort of atmosphere then an American animated film?

TM: Yeah, we purposely decided that we wanted to make a film that was showing a little bit of Irish culture, a little bit of Irish art and design. And it was a kind of response to the fact that there wasn't any real tradition of Irish animation, and we wanted to start something. We wanted to make films that had a sort of look and a sort of style going on. The Japanese have the same thing, and we wanted to do the same thing for Ireland.

LVF: What was the main inspiration when it came to the art of the film?

RS: We mostly looked at Celtic art as the main inspiration for the film, along with other medieval arts and other Celtic designs. You can definitely see that influence in our film. That's probably why it looks so different from American and Japanese animated films, because we're taking so much from Irish and Celtic culture and art.

LVF: Do you relate to any of the characters in your piece? Especially the character of Brendan, who seems to want to be an independent creative spirit?

TM: I think a lot of the artists who worked on the film, as with myself, saw themselves in Brendan. He's an artist just like we are artists, and he has a father who doesn't really approve and wants him to do something more sensible. So I think a lot of the artists connected with that, had a sort of kinship with Brendan.

RS: I had a kinship with Brother Aidan. Mostly because he's sort of a hippie and likes to spend time in the trees.

LVF: It seems that one of the center pieces of your film is a strong female driven character, which also seems to be the same with your next project as well. Do you feel that females don't get represented correctly enough in film or do you feel that you are representing them in a correct way?

TM: Well the problem originally with Kells were the first few drafts, it was like a submarine movie, there were too many men. But what I was interested in was there's definitely a sort of blend between the Pagan system, which is sort of goddess based and modern Christianity.I wanted in my film to show the new kind of Goddess, which is connected into the idea of the Virgin Mary. This to me is a natural response to the culture of the film.

Aisiling represents those kind of older beliefs in Ireland, which were more of a balance between male and female. She's kind of like the Irish idea of "the dreaming of Ireland", and having it appear as a beautiful woman. We definitely wanted a female element and for my next film, which almost was going to be girls dressed in bikini's on a spaceship, but in the end we chose Selkie's which is very female driven idea.

I think American films are more about boys and their fathers, which I think, when talking about Miyazaki's films, there is always a female protagonist. Which is what I really love about his films, they have a more gentler female side to it. This is something we wanted for our film as well.

RS: I think Aisiling is a strong spirited little girl, she is a good female character. She's not weak, she's very strong. She presents the Pagan belief and she has a big weight on her shoulders, especially for a little girl.

LVF: Do you have any big goals for the future of your careers?

TM: Yeah, just making cartoons for as long as I can make them.

RS: I plan on continuing to paint, and if Cartoon Saloon wants me I'll continue to work with them.

LVF: Finally, what is the message you would like people to learn about when they watch "The Secret of Kells"?

TM: There are a lot of messages. I suppose perseverance is important, so the art is important in kind of difficult times. Which I think is still relevant today.

RS: To continue the support of Irish animated films!

Dress Up Time #6: Christine from The Phantom of the Opera

Though I have discussed the infamous Phantom of the Opera here on LVF before (click here to read my multi-review), I thought I'd take a minute to focus on Christine for another fun Halloween and Dress Up Time subject!

But why Christine? Well, she's treasured for being one of the most known and played characters in Musical theater and film history. Phantom has been remade constantly since 1925, and many have taken on the role of Christine. But does it make this Diva at all interesting? To be honest, not really.

Christine, in my opinion, has no human struggles on the interior to really concur - which leaves little to be desired in viewing just her and also leaves her to be a bit well, dull. But what makes her so interesting and so thought after? Her co-star and her journey to the end of the story. Every girl has had some fantasy of a romantic thrilling adventure involving two handsome suitors being so entangled with your beauty and strengths that they'll fight for you in a multitude of ways. It's also easy to say that many, including myself, had had many a little fantasy of a tall, dark and mysterious man come and take us to a magical underworld of music.

So in that, we all wish to be Christine. To have the voice and beauty of an angel and to attract such attention along with the Phantom himself, allowing us to enter his world. So, interested in stepping into the feet of this future Opera star? Let's go to the masquerade in this outfit!

To start - rather than doing an outfit that's a literal translation of the usual attire of Christine, I chose to make it more "inspired by". This is due to the man versions of Christine and her many outfits through out the many adaptations. It was hard to pin point on one outfit, so I created a tribute to put best.

First, I couldn't ignore the greatest print by Alice and the Pirates (in my opinion), Masquerade Theater. Do you know what is the theme of the print? Phantom of the Opera, of course! So by default, I made sure this Christine is dressed in the jumperskirt version (in the cream colorway, to represent the innocence of the character.) The best thing to remember when creating this sort of look is to stick with creams and vintage browns, along with golds. Christine is suppose to be always representing a "bride yet to be wed" sort of look.

Next, I chose a nice white long sleeved cutsew to cover the shoulders. Christine must always appeared to be showing "selective skin." She always shows a respectable amount of shoulders and chest, especially for her time. For the feet, I chose a cream set of tights and a pair of brown short boots from Innocent World. Christine needs shows that can easily allow her to run away from The Phantom, but also to be elegant and girlie.

For some nice final touches, don't forget to add red roses anywhere you can for decoration! The Phantom is always giving Christine red roses, as they are his iconic prop. I recommend at least one rose in the hair with some tiny white flowers for a bit of extra beauty! Also remember to chose a cute gold or white bag to add a little bit of shimmer to the very calm outfit.

The last item I included is a charm bracelet, with tiny pictures from the 2004 musical version of Phantom, which can be found here on etsy. Nice little things like this and "mask" related decor make the outfit absolute perfection!

Hopefully you enjoyed this ensemble, and that you can enjoy partying at your own masquerade come Halloween. Just make sure to not let the Phantom capture you in his layer forever!

Dress Up Time #5: Ophelia from Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

Halloween is around the bend! So this month with Dress Up Time, we are going to focus on the more creepy girly characters you could dress as. This week we will start with Ophelia from the Oscar nominated Pan's Labyrinth (2006). Being directed by my hero Guillermo Del Toro, this film truly captures the lose of innocence and the experience of growing up at an age where fairy tales and dreams still run wild. The counter actions of the story with the tasks that Ophelia must do, interact in such a way that makes it very interesting to observe. Ophelia herself is a bit of a strange character. A girl lost in her own wonderland that to the viewer and herself can not be decided if it is real or in her head. Regardless, whether it be real or not, this world is truly fantastic and scary. But what should you wear to experience the Labyrinth with El Fauno? Let's take a look!

Ophelia, along with the entire color palette of the film, are all muted earth tones. This is great for those who are classic, gothic or country lolita's. It also works very well for those who love Mori Girl or Dolly Kei styles. First, chose a peter pan colored one-piece in either a green, grey, navy blue or black color.

Then go with a brown, grey or nude sweater. Make sure it's a very big and comfortable sweater, as Ophelia goes on long and tough journey's in her outfits.

Next, chose a nice brown or black leather messenger bag. Ophelia carries many objects with her on her travels, so you'll want something sturdy.

For your feet, go with a pair of white tick knee high socks. Bonus points if you find ones with a leave or tree pattern, but don't go with anything too over the top. Make sure not to forget a pair of black oxford shoes. Make sure they are comfortable, otherwise it'll be hard to get through The Pale Man's chambers.

To give a nice finishing touch, find a gothic styled fairy or dragon fly necklace. This represents the "Fairy" creatures in the story that help Ophelia on her quest. If you want to have a head piece (Though it's not required.), either go with a nice green headbow or a simple black hat. After all of this, you are ready to journey into the labyrinth!

If you've never seen Pan's Labyrinth, I highly recommend it as a Halloween or Fall movie choice! It has a great creepy yet beautiful atmosphere and some of the most shocking imagery yet. It'll haunt and move you at the same time. If you want to check out another similar piece by Del Toro, go with Cronos (His first and my favorite of his works) Which tells the story of a grandfather who, by the bite of a haunted piece of clock work robotics, is turned into a vampire. Either way, you'll be sure to have fun!
